Steelers EDGE Tyree Johnson, Texas A&M

The Steelers have a solid history of great edge play and usually find themselves near the top of the league in sacks as a team. They have arguably the best edge defender in the league in T.J. Watt on one side and Alex Highsmith on the other but, not much depth after that.

Despite the lack of depth after trading away Melvin Ingram, the team led the league in sacks with 55 in 2021. The biggest chunk (22.5) came from Watt and Highsmith had six.

Pittsburgh signing Tyree Johnson and T.D. Moultry as UDFAs along lets us know the team sees their lack of depth at the position and they want bodies around to compete for depth roles. They also signed Genard Avery, Derek Tuszka, and Tuzar Skipper this offseason to bring to camp.

Tyree Johnson stands a solid chance competing against this group as he has explosive speed and bend around the edge that helps his case as a situational pass rusher. His run defense could hinder his chances but they really need someone for a few breathers here and there for the starters and Johnson is perfect.

The group behind Watt and Highsmith just needs to be able to give the starters a breather for a series or two here and there. Johnson has as much of a chance as any in the group listed to grab one of the final spots in camp.
