Former Steelers McLendon

A name that seems ancient based on when he played with the Steelers, Steve McLendon has to be praised for his staying power if last season was truly it for him. Found as an undrafted free agent by the team in 2010, he quickly developed into a capable backup, and later a good starter. Even after he signed with the Jets, McLendon went on to enjoy seven more years in the league as a good starter.

A throwback style of player along the line, McLendon slotted in well as a base nose tackle. He could take up space and move offensive linemen around, thus plugging running lanes. As a pass rusher, he could generate some pressure, but it wasn’t a strength of his game. His stout run defense made him a valuable player for a long time though.

It seems like the end of the line for McLendon. While he appeared in 12 games for the Buccaneers last year, age seems to be taking its toll on the defensive lineman. He is no longer the effective pro that he was once before. A team could add him as veteran depth, but it seems likely that McLendon has played his last snap in the league.
