The Pittsburgh Steelers want to be competitors in 2022. Here are three positions they could still look to sign after adding defensive tackle, Larry Ogunjobi.
Just when we think the Steelers offseason is starting to get dull, Pittsburgh makes another move. After inking Minkah Fitzpatrick to a long-term deal earlier than expected, new general manager Omar Khan snatched up an impressive defensive tackle in Larry Ogunjobi.
The Ogunjobi signing will no doubt help solidify a defensive line that struggled in 2021 after being riddled with injuries. However, I wouldn’t expect the Steelers to be done just yet. Here are three positions they could still look to fortify before the start of training camp:
Steelers could target edge defender
With the reigning Defensive Player of the Year on hand, I don’t worry about whether or not T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith will be able to get after the quarterback in 2022. Justifiably, however, I worry about the lack of depth at the position and what an injury to one of their starters could mean for the defense.
Last year, Watt was hampered with nagging hip, knee, and groin issues that he was forced to play through after Melvin Ingram forced his way out of town early in the year. While Derrek Tuszka showed some promise, the Steelers could really use a proven, competent third edge rusher.
Someone like Takk McKinley would make sense. McKinley is coming off a torn Achilles from late in the 2022 season so they would have to be patient with him during the summer, but he’s a perfect fit in their scheme. Whoever it ends up being, don’t be surprised if Pittsburgh brings in another edge defender soon.
