Why the Steelers might Fire Canada

In 2021, Matt Canada had his own scapegoat. His sacrificial lamb happened to be Ben Roethlisberger. Matt Canada claimed Big Ben hijacked the offense and prevented him from running the offense he wanted. It was a fair point. Roethlisberger was more of a statue than in his younger days when he found ways to extend the life of plays under pressure. Plus, Big Ben has never shied away from the fact he never liked running play-action passes, the two things that are a cornerstone of Matt Canada’s play-calling scheme.

Not everyone seemed sold on what they felt was a cop-out by Matt Canada. Case in point Pittsburg Post Gazette writer and Matt Canada critic Ron Cook. He argued the Steelers play calling was at its best when Big Ben essentially ran the offense in the 2nd halves of most games. The Steelers had no choice but to let Ben run the offense as in 8 games in 2021; the Steelers scored three or fewer points. However, in 2022 scoring no more than three points in half the games won’t cut the mustard. If the Steelers need to play come from behind in most of their games well, they will have a very dismal record.

If that does occur, do not look to See Matt Canada stay with the Steelers, they will promptly show him the exit. The only thing that preserves Matt Canada’s job as offensive coordinator will be a playoff run.
