Steelers SAF Damontae Kazee

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed Damontae Kazee as a free agent this offseason. What many fans may not realize is that the former Falcons and Cowboys safety earned a whopping 7 interceptions in 15 starts during the 2018 season.

This type of interception isn’t sustainable even among All-Pro defenders. However, Kazee’s experience as a starter and ability to take the ball away certainly offer some intrigue. In his first five seasons, Kazee has started 49 of 69 career games while earning 12 interceptions and 7 forced fumbles.

Interestingly, Terrell Edmunds has started 60 of 64 games, but has earned just 5 interceptions and hasn’t recorded a forced fumble yet in his career. This isn’t to say that Kazee is a better player — he’s certainly had his share of inconsistencies — but the difference in their play-making ability is noticeable.

It’s also worth noting that Kazee has experience at several positions in the secondary, including free safety and strong safety. The former Cowboys and Falcons defender could find a home as a key contributor in sub-packages if all goes well.
