The Steelers have a stable of good young pass catchers but who will stand out

Diontae Johnson is rightfully the front runner for the title of number 1 receiver in black and gold this year. However, while I agree that he is certainly talented and is now the most experienced pass catcher in black and gold, I can’t say for sure what roles everyone will have this season.

Johnson did most of his damage catching deep balls along the sidelines this year and neither Mitch Trubisky nor Kenny Pickett are known for targeting that area of the field. We also have to take into consideration that rookie George Pickens has the highest ceiling in terms of potential ability out of any of their pass-catchers right now.

In what should be a run-first offense, with a new offensive scheme, and a new starting quarterback, roles will be redefined this offseason. The passing attack is likely starting from scratch. Furthermore, the offense may favor attacking defenses over the middle of the field. If this is the case, 2022 could be a breakout year for young players like George Pickens, Chase Claypool, or even Pat Freiermuth.

I will be watching the receivers within the offense like a hawk this camp. I for one can’t wait to find out who will be the featured players in this new system. I also can’t wait to see which receivers will be able to build a rapport with which quarterbacks.
