Mason Rudolph might have his days numbered with the Pittsburgh Steelers as he could get traded to the NFC soon, according to rumors.

The Steelers are currently in the middle of a quarterback competition now. They are looking to iron out the different depth spots as you read this article, but they still have a long road ahead of them. Right now, it is Mitch Trubsiky’s job, and it does not seem to be changing anytime soon.

Kenny Pickett is the new guy that many are excited to see play some meaningful football, especially as he progresses as a prospect. He has done some nice things for this club and continues to get acclimated to the game as each practice passes by. That leaves Mason Rudolph and what his future might bring with Pittsburgh.

He has been the long-time backup for this franchise and some thought that he would get a legit shot at the starting gig in 2022. The offseason went against his favor and now he sits in the backseat of the car without support for the starting job. He could always stay at the third string spot, and that would be solid depth, but he might want out of the town that drafted him.

Could Steelers trade Mason Rudolph soon?

According to a report by a not-so-reliable source, Rudolph might be dealt soon. The rumor states that the Detroit Lions might have some level of interest in reaching out to the Steelers about acquiring the quarterback via trade. The tweet from Andrew Fillipponi claims that the veteran could be shipped off to his new team within the next week.

That is a bold thought to throw out there and seems a little puzzling from what Mike Tomlin has been preaching to the media outlets. Tomlin seems to be comfortable going into the season with all three on the roster, and it makes perfect sense to do that. All bring something unique with their game when it comes to experience, ceilings, and familiarity with the Steelers organization.

One would imagine if a trade would happen at any point, especially early on, would require for a club to offer the black and gold a nice return coming back the other way. Would a fourth-round pick cause Pittsburgh to send Rudolph packing to Michigan? One would have to imagine as that return seems too good to pass up.

Fillipponi has not been the most reliable source in the sports scene of the city that he covers over his career. This one is not totally off base, but the Steelers would probably prefer to trade Rudolph towards the end of the preseason, if at all. It seems like he will stay if you were a betting person, but he could force his way out if he chooses to do so.

The question that this team is going to need to figure out is if they feel more comfortable with Rudolph in the fold or not. He is a solid third option in your room that could keep you in games when most third-stringers would not. He is not a perfect player, but he would be one of the best backups at that point on the depth chart across the NFL. Perhaps a trade will be forced or the return would be too much to turn down, but right now the Steelers seem fine with keeping him.
