Who are the 15 strongest players in Steelers history?
By Eric Hassel
The Steelers selected an absolute behemoth in the fifth round of the 1977 draft
So, when I used the term ‘the side of a mountain’, I was paying homage to my late father who played semi-professional football in the 1970s. My dad was a shade over six feet tall, weighed about two hundred and twenty-five pounds, and set up a mini gym in the garage.
My father also served in the military back in the 1950s. He would often say that the training made him look like the ‘side of a mountain’ and that is exactly what I thought when I first saw Steve Courson. Although he was listed at 6′ 1″ and 274 lbs., Courson looked so much bigger than any other Steelers lineman with whom he played.
Courson made honorable mention in an article from a site called The Barbell. The article detailed the ten strongest NFL players ever. According to this article, Courson was purported to have benched 605 pounds. Having played with and worked out with some of the strongest Steelers O-linemen, I am not all surprised at this feat of strength.
Courson was an integral part of two Super Bowl-winning teams. He could just simply ‘out-muscle’ the defender he was blocking. He was strong at the point of attack and had solid technique. I was really upset that he played his last two seasons for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Let’s see who comes in at number four on our list.
