There has been plenty of talk this offseason about the potential for the Pittsburgh Steelers to move on from T.J. Watt. The veteran's contract has become more of a burden than anything, and he might be better off elsewhere.
But what if Watt isn't the edge rusher Pittsburgh moves? After signing Nick Herbig to a major contract extension, the door is open for the Steelers to shop Alex Highsmith. General manager Omar Khan hasn't indicated that he's interested in trading the veteran pass rusher, so it may take a bit of an overpay to get a deal done.
As Bleacher Report analyst Kristopher Knox detailed in a recent article, "There hasn't been any real trade buzz involving Pittsburgh Steelers edge-defender Alex Highsmith. The Steelers won't have any interest in moving the 28-year-old at a bargain price—not as long as they believe they can contend with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, anyway. However, a strong offer should at least generate some interest in Pittsburgh."
With that in mind, we've cooked up a few admittedly bold mock trades for the star defender.
3 blockbuster Alex Highsmith trades to pry him away from the Pittsburgh Steelers
More often than not, modern NFL trades are built around draft picks, rather than player-for-player deals. If the Steelers move Highsmith for picks, they could expect to receive a third and a bit more in return.
Using the Jonathan Greenard trade as a framework, they may even land two third-round selections. While they're already thin on draft capital, the Green Bay Packers could look to pair Highsmith with Micah Parsons to create an unstoppable edge duo.
If the Steelers do want to get a player in return, Chicago Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson could be a solid option. He's entering the final year of his current contract and has shown the ability to be a starting-caliber cornerback.
Even after signing Jamel Dean this offseason, the Steelers could use another capable cornerback. Throw in a third-round pick, and this might be enough to get the deal done.
Khan might be hesitant to move Highsmith without a clear replacement on the edge. After a strong season in which he finished with 5.5 sacks, Dallas Cowboys edge rusher James Houston could sweeten the deal. He likely wouldn't start for the Steelers, but he'd provide solid short-term depth.
The Cowboys have already added to their edge room this offseason, but they still lack a true ace at the position. Highsmith could be that player.
