Nobody wants to part ways with offensive line depth—even if that depth comes in the form of Broderick Jones. However, with what the Dallas Cowboys were offering in a trade for the failed 2023 first-round pick, how could the Steelers say no?
In exchange for Jones and a 2027 fourth-round pick, the Steelers received a 2027 third-rounder and a 2027 sixth-round pick. But as underwhelming as he was as a starter, trading Jones suddenly leaves the Steelers with razor-thin offensive tackle depth—and Pittsburgh is just one injury away from not having a competent swing tackle.
Thankfully, there are players available who could essentially act as Broderick clones for the Steelers—former underwhelming picks who could offer just as much as Jones otherwise would have if their number is called this year.
The Pittsburgh Steelers should look to sign one of these three offensive tackles to replace Broderick Jones
Wanya Morris
Wanya Morris, a draft pick by the Chiefs, spent his first three seasons in Kansas City before being traded to the Falcons this offseason for a late-round pick swap. Unfortunately, Morris wasn't able to catch on. He was a surprise cut at the NFL roster deadline, and he quickly found a home on the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad.
In order to poach Morris off the Cowboys' practice squad, the Steelers would need to sign him to the active roster. Theoretically, this shouldn't be an issue, as Morris could simply assume the role of the Steelers' OT4 that Broderick was expected to have in Pittsburgh before the trade.
In a corresponding move, the Steelers could cut reserve center Ryan McCollum and have him circle back to the practice squad.
Morris and Jones have essentially been the same player since entering the league. They are both 25-year-old tackles with impressive athletic profiles who haven't panned out as full-time starters. By signing Morris, the Steelers wouldn't skip a beat (and the best part is that they will have gained draft capital in the process by essentially swapping Jones for Morris).
Evan Neal
Because of the value of the offensive tackle position, we don't often see 25-year-old former top-10 draft picks floating out there in free agency, but that shows you where Evan Neal's career path has gone so far. Neal dealt with nagging injuries and major struggles early in his career. Thus, the big offensive tackle has played just 16 games between the 2023 and 2024 seasons and never logged a snap last year.
Neal hasn't been great when on the field in his first four seasons with the New York Giants, and they even experimented with him at guard. However, he has started 27 of 29 NFL games played, and his experience would be welcome if push comes to shove.
The best part is that the Steelers may not even have to devote a roster spot to Neal, as they could look to sign the veteran offensive tackle to the practice squad and simply promote him if/when injuries strike.
Cam Robinson
There's not a ton to get excited about in a nearly 31-year-old tackle who has bounced around on four teams since 2022, but Cam Robinson would offer excellent depth as a reserve offensive tackle. Like Jones, Robinson has never been able to iron out all the kinks in his game, and unfortunately, he's coming off the worst season of his career.
But that's probably the only reason why the experienced OT is available right now. Robinson is a huge offensive tackle who has started 114 of 117 games. Beacuse of this, he may only wish to sign with a team where he feels he can rebound and get a chance to start.
However, if he's willing to come aboard, he could fill Broderick Jones' former role as a backup tackle without the Steelers experiencing a drop-off.
