The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to wrap up 2025, waiting patiently to see if they will make the playoffs. As we head into the new year, it is time to reflect on what turned out to be one of the most tumultuous seasons in Pittsburgh’s history.

The team received a major makeover in the offseason. From gutting the quarterback room once again to adding key defensive veterans, the Steelers tried to make as much mud stick to the wall as possible.

However, not every move has panned out, and there are quite a few players on this roster who are in need of a fresh start. Their time in Pittsburgh hasn’t been what they had wanted.

With the new year nearly here, these three players will cross their fingers that they can get a new opportunity on a new team in 2026.

Pittsburgh Steelers players who are in need of a new home in the new year

Jonnu Smith, TE

Jonnu Smith was a sneaky fun addition during the summer. He had a massive breakout season in Miami and wanted out after the Dolphins opted not to give him a new contract. He became collateral in the Minkah Fitzpatrick for Jalen Ramsey trade.

It felt like a good fit. Smith entered a familiar offense that wanted to utilize the tight end room. The results on the field? Not nearly as good.

Smith never got on the same page as Aaron Rodgers, and it feels like he has been more of a waste as opposed to a weapon for this team. Smith has found some success on the ground, but overall, his value has been limited for the team.

He feels like an easy cut once the offseason rolls around. He is still young enough to find a new home and make an impact, though.

Jabrill Peppers, DB

Jabrill Peppers joined the Steelers shortly after the season got underway as the depth at safety was instantly tested. While he saw some work early, he was ultimately replaced by Kyle Dugger and Chuck Clark. He hasn’t played a defensive snap since Week 10.

That being said, I don’t think his play on the field was that bad, and one could argue he should be seeing snaps over Clark. Peppers still has the athleticism that made him an asset on special teams, but he likely still wants a role on defense somewhere.

While he won’t be given a starting spot next year, it seems like someone will add him to the roster to provide their defense with a capable starter. He is likely itching for March to come so he can find his next opportunity.

Roman Wilson, WR

The player on this list most likely to be around next year, one has to wonder if Roman Wilson wants out after two seasons with the Steelers. A former third-round pick, Pittsburgh hoped to get a viable receiver to develop into a starter.

His rookie season was lost to an injury, and while he had some highlights in his second season, he suddenly found himself as a healthy scratch. He couldn’t find his footing even when DK Metcalf was out from a suspension.

The Steelers could seriously reconstruct their receiver room next offseason. While I doubt Wilson will be cut, he could be a sneaky trade candidate. Considering how the team has used him, he may be hoping to be moved.
