The Pittsburgh Steelers dominated the New York Jets on Sunday Night Football with QB Russell Wilson leading the charge after a rather controversial start from head coach Mike Tomlin. As the team heads into Week 8, the Steelers are in need of keeping pace with the Baltimore Ravens to secure the top spot in the AFC North.

Nevertheless, like any great team, there are still looming concerns that this young squad must address.

Subpar tackling in the open-field

The Steelers triumph over the Jets showcased a stellar team effort. Unless you really delve into the technical details, the squad played nearly flawlessly in all aspects and positions of the game. However, one glaring issue that remains is wrapping up a ball carrier with concise tackling and ultimately preventing splash plays from occurring.

So far this season, the Steelers defense has struggled with tackling beyond the line of scrimmage. While they have shown proficiency in defending the run, open-field tackling has been a significant issue.

There appears to be a tendency to prioritize stripping the ball from the ball carrier rather than focusing on solid tackling. As we look ahead to Week 8, it is imperative that we address these tackling issues to ensure a more effective defense and the ability to get off the field earlier.

WR depth showcases dire need for a proven veteran presence

Steelers fans are on the edge of their seats, hoping for the team to secure a seasoned WR who can elevate the passing game and maximize the versatile throwing skills of QB Russell Wilson. While trade talks with the New York Jets for WR Mike Williams have hit a snag, it’s highly probable that the veteran WR will don the black and gold before the trade deadline, bringing a new dimension to the team’s offense.

By adding a proven and experienced veteran WR to the Steelers’ receiving group, the 2024 squad could become a serious threat for opposing teams on both offense and defense. While George Pickens continues to excel as the top receiver, the addition of another strong and poised WR would greatly enhance the offensive capabilities.

As the Steelers eagerly await this addition, Steelers Nation will relish in the fact that TE Pat Freiermuth is stepping up, ensuring that our team remains competitive, even as the WR2 position remains vacant.

Offensive line stays clean on penalties but one falters in protection

Throughout the majority of the Steelers game against the Jets, fans were treated to QB Russell Wilson orchestrating a passing game that completely overwhelmed the Jets defense. For the second time this season, Steelers fans also observed an impressively low number of penalties called on the team, with only 4 for 36 yards on the day. Despite ongoing changes in the offensive line, this represents a significant step forward for the young squad in minimizing their penalties.

The primary concern on the offensive line revolves around Broderick Jones. Whether Jones is stationed at right tackle or left tackle, he consistently struggles to provide adequate protection for his QB.

If this trend continues, head coach Mike Tomlin may have no choice but to permanently bench Jones in order to better safeguard the quarterback. Jones consistently receives the lowest blocking grades on the line, making him a crucial weak link.

In the weeks ahead, Jones will have the opportunity to rejuvenate his playing abilities and demonstrate why he can be a formidable force if he continues to put in the work on the field. The offensive line must quickly find its rhythm, especially with tough opponents on the horizon.

Steelers Nation: continue to be patient; this team has the potential for a deep run this season if they can address these challenges.
