There are too many question marks in the trenches to ignore.

The Pittsburgh Steelers opened free agency with an impressive start. On the first day, they stayed busy by signing Rico Dowdle and Jamel Dean to solid contracts. They also traded for Michael Pittman Jr. and secured him with a reasonably priced extension. It was a strong initial wave of moves by General Manager Omar Khan, but the team cannot afford to grow complacent.

The Steelers don’t have much cap space remaining this offseason, but they can create additional room through various contract moves. Expect a few restructures and possibly an extension or two in the coming weeks as they prepare for the NFL Draft.

In the meantime, the team should focus on addressing the lingering issues on the left side of the offensive line.

Isaac Seumalo departed in free agency after signing a substantial three‑year deal with the Cardinals. Meanwhile, Broderick Jones’s injury could sideline him for an extended period, which raises a significant concern at the left tackle position. Although the Steelers could address these issues in the NFL Draft, it would be smart for them to explore the remaining free‑agent options as well.

The Pittsburgh Steelers should stay aggressive in free agency and add to their offensive line

Elgton Jenkins, LG

Elgton Jenkins was recently released as a cap casualty by the Green Bay Packers, and the Steelers have been targeting players who won’t affect their compensatory pick formula for next year.

Free agents who were cut, rather than those who simply reached the end of their contracts, do not count against the comp‑pick formula. Jenkins would be an excellent addition; he has played his best football at left guard and could offer a clear upgrade over Seumalo.

Fred Johnson, OL

While this free agent may not represent a clear upgrade, Fred Johnson offers valuable versatility. He can serve as a swing tackle or step in as a starter at either guard spot when needed. The Steelers could benefit from adding a veteran with his level of starting experience to the roster. Johnson could also compete with Dylan Cook for the left tackle job if Jones is sidelined with an injury long‑term.

Cam Robinson, OT

If Jones is at risk of missing a significant portion of the regular season, the Steelers need to act quickly. Signing a free‑agent left tackle who can step in and start should be a top priority.

Cam Robinson may not be a standout player, but he has extensive experience at the position and can provide reliable, starting‑caliber play. He also shouldn’t command a costly contract, making him a practical short‑term solution. Even if Robinson is the choice, the Steelers should still plan to target the position early in the upcoming draft.

Wyatt Teller, OG

He has played some of his best football on the right side, but Wyatt Teller could still be an intriguing free‑agent addition. The Steelers should be serious about reinforcing their trenches, especially given the physical style of the AFC North. Teller spent the past seven years with the Browns, so he understands the division. Adding him would give Pittsburgh a tough, experienced presence up front.
