This offseason has and will continue to hinge on one major position for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the free agency period has also seen this team make several moves. Through the first wave of free agency, Pittsburgh's signings have reached double digits. They have been as active as anyone.
Yet, the most important position in the game, today, has yet to be solidified: quarterback.
With that in mind, the Steelers still have several of their own players on the open market and awaiting their next opportunity, with one big name included.
Who's still available? Could any of them make a return? Let's dive into a handful of notable names most recently in Pittsburgh and still available in the free agent pool.
Notable Steelers free agents still looking for a job
Cameron Sutton, CB
The longtime Steelers cornerback took a brief hiatus when he spent the 2023 season with the Detroit Lions before returning to Pittsburgh in 2024. He only ended up starting two games for the Steelers last year and is probably best served as a backup at this point. But, the 30-year-old has started 58 games over his 8-year career and would give any prospective team added depth in the secondary.
CJ Henderson, CB
Another free agent cornerback, former first-round pick CJ Henderson, has seen quite the downward trend in his career. At one point a starter, Henderson has fallen all the way down to being strictly a practice squad or reserve player at this stage. Still only 26 years old, Henderson's career could have some time left, but he will have to work extra hard to make an impact from here on out.
Preston Smith, OLB
The veteran pass rusher appeared active for eight games in Pittsburgh, last year, after his release from the Green Bay Packers. Smith ended up with just 2.0 sacks in those games as a situational rusher who played 30 percent of defensive snaps for the team. At age 32, he is a bit limited and not anywhere near the player he once was. But, some contending team should still give him an opportunity to come in and play a similar role as he did in Pittsburgh last season.
Russell Wilson, QB
Finally, of course, there's quarterback Russell Wilson. As we await the Aaron Rodgers decision, Wilson is one of the key names impacted by said decision. Depending on where Rodgers ends up, Wilson could make his next move soon thereafter.
A return to Pittsburgh seems possible, still, although Steelers fans might not like that option. Wilson recently visited with the Cleveland Browns, and the New York Giants remain a possibility for the longtime Seahawk now-turned journeyman.
He wouldn't be the worst option for Pittsburgh, but Wilson is far from the long-term answer. The 36-year-old veteran might be the best option remaining not named Rodgers.
