5 compelling fallback options for Steelers after missing on Davante Adams trade
It might not have ended the way many fans of the Steelers had hoped, but Davante Adams has been traded. Instead of landing with Pittsburgh, he was sent to the New York Jets for a conditional third-round selection. It was financially unstable for the black and gold to acquire Adams, but it seems like the star receiver always wanted to end up with a reunion of Aaron Rodgers in the Big Apple.
For Pittsburgh, it is back to the drawing board when it comes to potential trade options. Even though there might not be any Adams or Brandon Aiyuk-level receivers out there anymore, they could still find an upgrade.
The Steelers have a ton of question marks on their roster, but the second spot at the wide receiver position has remained a constant problem. They need to add someone to give themselves a shot at the playoffs.
Pittsburgh could always look to trade for a rental option
Mike Williams
Things have become crowded in the Jets receiving room since Adams was traded there. We know the Steelers had plans to work out Mike Williams in free agency this past offseason. He never came to Pittsburgh as he opted to sign with the Jets before that could happen. He is a big receiver who has produced good numbers in the past. Williams has been off to a slow start in New York and could be a cheaper option.
DeAndre Hopkins
One of the "bigger names" still being floated out there in connection to the Steelers is DeAndre Hopkins. The veteran receiver is on the downswing of his career, but he would be a nice addition to Pittsburgh's offense. They need an experienced guy to work with George Pickens, and Hopkins has been one of the best receivers in football for the past decade. Tennessee could be big-time sellers.
Steelers could add a receiver with contracts beyond 2024
Christian Kirk
Since they missed out on Adams, maybe they want to add a "long-term" option beyond this year. Christian Kirk is someone who could be available since Jacksonville is terrible. He remains productive since signing a massive contract in free agency years ago. He will be a pending free agent after next season, so that would leave the door open for a George Pickens extension without the two overlapping.
Romeo Doubs
There is some awkward tension in Green Bay as Romeo Doubs and the Packers go through some struggles in their relationship. Adding another potential distraction to the Steelers could be a problem, but Doubs would be a terrific addition to the receiving core. The Packers might be ready to move on from the young player if his current trend continues. The Steelers should gauge their trade interest.
Tyler Lockett
Since Russell Wilson has a shot at remaining the starter of the Steelers from now on, it would make sense for Pittsburgh to call Seattle. Tyler Lockett is much older now, but he remains a productive receiver. His biggest strength is his route running, and Wilson is familiar with him. Their group of receivers could use some help from Lockett and the leadership he could provide to them.
