It was not surprising to see the Pittsburgh Steelers finalize a substantial contract extension with their elite kicker, Chris Boswell. He earned the raise and continues to be the team’s most reliable source of points. After years of inconsistent offensive play, Pittsburgh has leaned heavily on Boswell’s accuracy and strong leg to stay competitive on the scoreboard.
His extension may also signal the beginning of a broader spending push by the organization.
Following Boswell’s contract extension, it would not be surprising to see the Steelers continue rewarding their own players with meaningful raises. Several members of the roster, particularly from the 2023 draft class, are entering the season with expiring contracts. The organization would be wise to initiate negotiations sooner rather than later and attempt to reach agreements with those players.
Pittsburgh Steelers might sign contract exensions with these players after Chris Boswell's deal
Nick Herbig
Nick Herbig’s future will be an intriguing storyline to watch unfold. In many ways, the Steelers appear headed toward a decision between him and Alex Highsmith once the season concludes, and the early signs suggest Herbig could emerge as the priority. He is younger and has already shown he can be a productive pass rusher.
Pittsburgh could wait until after the upcoming season to extend him, but that approach comes with risk if Herbig breaks out and drives his price up.
Darnell Washington
One player flying under the radar when it comes to a potential contract extension is Darnell Washington. He emerged as the Steelers’ most effective tight end last season and could develop into a star if given a larger role. Committing to Washington could raise questions about Pat Freiermuth’s long-term future with the team, but it is difficult to overlook Washington’s size and upside.
Joey Porter Jr.
Outside of re-signing Boswell to a contract extension, Joey Porter Jr. stands out as the clear favorite to receive a new deal. He has developed into a star cornerback for Pittsburgh, even as penalties remain part of his game. The Steelers understand they have a top-tier talent in Porter, and that recognition should lead to a significant pay raise.
It would be surprising if Porter and the organization do not reach an agreement before the regular season begins.
Dylan Cook
No one should expect it, but Dylan Cook could be a player the Steelers attempt to buy low on. A modest two-year deal will give the team flexibility to move on if he fails to build on his strong finish to the 2025 season. Cook showed he is capable of starting at the NFL level, which could give him a legitimate opportunity to earn a role this year. This could be a good low-risk safety measure.
Keeanu Benton
Another matter the Steelers may need to address is Keeanu Benton.
He has not been consistent enough to justify a massive contract extension at this point, but Pittsburgh also lacks clear long-term options behind him. Bringing Benton back would make sense for roster continuity, though he could command significant money on the open market. The Steelers may choose to wait and see if he takes another step forward this season before committing to a deal.
