The Steelers' season officially ended with an abrupt playoff exit against the Ravens, and many will wonder what's next for the team. The NFL Draft will take place in late April, and free agency will continue to be a busy time in Pittsburgh. This team is projected to have a little over $58 million in spending cash, but retaining their roster from the 2024 season won't be the plan.
Another year ending with a short playoff run indicates more roster turnover, similar to the last offseason. Steelers fans are getting antsy... and rightfully so. They are exhausted of the middle ground that they are currently in.
Sure, this team never had a losing season under Mike Tomlin, but they haven't come close to playoff relevance either. Change is inevitable in the NFL, and there will be plenty of that this offseason. These five players won't be back for the 2025 season.
Van Jefferson, WR
It's a pretty obvious choice for the Steelers to move on from Van Jefferson. He is someone who hasn't done much despite being given a top receiver spot on their offense. Things just never worked out for Jefferson and Pittsburgh, and he had plenty of chances to catch on since the club couldn't find a legit upgrade at their second receiver spot. The veteran wide receiver will have trouble finding a job in free agency.
Cam Sutton, CB
Many thought bringing back Cam Sutton was a brilliant idea when the signing was announced. Well, everything has gone downhill in a hurry for the veteran. Sutton was given the starting slot cornerback role after returning from his lengthy suspension. Since then, is play was awful. It is time to move on from Sutton and try to find an upgrade over Beanie Bishop this offseason.

Najee Harris, RB
Najee Harris could always be brought back next season, but his return is unlikely. Paying a running back in the NFL is something most teams cannot afford. Likewise, dishing out a hefty contract to a replaceable player like Harris big-time money would be a mistake. You cannot deny his dependability and production during his time in Pittsburgh, but he isn't worth a big extension. If Harris comes back for cheap, then they should consider it.
Donte Jackson, CB
In an ideal world, the Steelers would be able to hang onto Donte Jackson, but that won't happen. He has produced the best interception numbers during this season for his career. It might price him out of Pittsburgh. Jackson might have produced big numbers in the turnover margin, but he has struggled late in the campaign. Some clubs will only see the interceptions and throw a lot of money at him.
Russell Wilson, QB
Mike Tomlin loves Russell Wilson, and he has been a terrific leader for the team. You cannot deny the type of veteran presence that Wilson brings with him, but his upcoming contract projections should scare the Steelers away in free agency. Many want Justin Fields to be the starter next year but don't be shocked if they bring back Wilson on a short-term deal despite his late-season failures.
