Coming off their bye week, the Steelers face a surprising 7-2 Washington Commanders team—a challenging first matchup in what promises to be a demanding second half of the season. This game marks the Steelers' first major test, and it won’t come easy.
The Commanders bring a talented roster and a promising future. For the Steelers to set a strong tone after the bye, they'll need to keep an eye on these six key Commanders players.
QB, Jayden Daniels
The rookie phenom has burst onto the NFL scene, delivering an exceptional performance through the first 10 weeks. Daniels has already made a compelling case for Rookie of the Year with his impressive play. As a true dual-threat quarterback, he poses a serious challenge, with abilities reminiscent of Lamar Jackson’s.
While the Steelers have historically handled dual-threat quarterbacks well and generally succeeded against rookies, they’ll need a dedicated game plan to contain Daniels.
The Steelers’ defense must focus on limiting his explosive potential. Preventing big plays will be key—stop the deep ball, and don't allow Daniels to succeed on throws outside the numbers. His passing ability has been impressive for a first-year quarterback, and Pittsburgh can’t let him gain momentum with deep throws.
Just as important, they can’t let him extend plays or break free for runs up the middle. With his speed, Daniels demands the same disciplined approach the Steelers use against Lamar Jackson. Maintaining gap integrity and sealing off running lanes will be crucial.
To disrupt Daniels, the Steelers should collapse the pocket, use pre-snap and post-snap disguises, and force him into uncomfortable decisions. Defensive discipline is critical—a few missteps could lead to costly big plays and be a major factor in the outcome of the game.
RB, Brian Robinson Jr
A talented running back with 6 rushing touchdowns already this season poses a real threat. The Steelers have struggled to stop the run at times, and this game is one where they can’t afford any lapses. The defense will need to tackle more effectively and bring a greater physical edge if they want to improve their run defense in the second half of the season.
WR, Terry McLaurin
Terry McLaurin, often overlooked among NFL wide receivers, has consistently performed at a high level despite facing challenges with quarterback play and team performance in Washington. Known for his precise route running and reliable hands, "Scary Terry" remains a top threat on the field.
However, the Steelers' defense has excelled this season at neutralizing opponents’ top receivers, so they'll need to maintain that focus against McLaurin. Leaving their corners in one-on-one situations with him could prove risky. The strategy should be to contain McLaurin and force Washington's other receivers to step up and make plays.
LB, Frankie Luvu
A free agent signing for the Commanders has quickly become the heart and soul of their defense, making an impact all over the field. Luvu is another key player who deserves more attention, as he contributes in every area and plays a vital role in the Commanders' defensive success.
DT, Daron Payne & Jer'Zhan Newton
Daron Payne has been a cornerstone of the Washington defense for years, establishing himself as one of the league's top defensive linemen. Before Jonathan Allen’s season-ending torn pec, Washington's defensive line was considered one of the best in the league. However, with Allen out, the Commanders’ second-round pick, Jer'Zhan Newton, has stepped up, showing impressive explosiveness and violent hand usage.
With Zach Frazier likely returning, the Steelers interior offensive line will face a major challenge in going up against Payne and Newton. For the Steelers to succeed in their running game and play-action passing attack, their interior line will need to perform at a high level.
