6 overlooked free agents who could quietly fix Steelers roster

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a solid amount of cap space to work with this offseason. Once free agency begins, they will have roughly $46.22 million available, which gives them enough flexibility to pursue meaningful upgrades. While many fans naturally focus on the top free agents, it is often the players who stay under the radar that create the biggest opportunities.

Players who are not getting much attention heading into free agency could become valuable bargains.

They may not require a massive contract, but they could deliver significant returns. Think about how much Brandin Echols and Kenneth Gainwell contributed last season. Neither was a big-ticket free agent signing, yet both became important factors for Pittsburgh. The Steelers could look to make similar low-cost, high-impact moves again.

Pittsburgh Steelers could target buy-low free agents to boost their free agency class

Braxton Jones, OT

Many people should be concerned about the injury status of Broderick Jones, and that situation should prompt movement this offseason. Braxton Jones should be an interesting free agent for the Steelers to consider. He will be only 27 years old when next season begins and has plenty of starting experience at left tackle. He should come at a low cost and serve as a reliable fallback option.

Roger McCreary, CB

After being labeled a draft bust, Roger McCreary put together an impressive rebound season with the LA Rams.

He was traded this past October, and the move turned out to be a blessing for him. Following a strong campaign, McCreary should receive a modest pay increase. His next contract is not expected to be massive, but he could still be a very good value addition. McCreary has the versatility to play both in the slot and on the outside at cornerback.

Darnell Mooney, WR

Expect the Steelers to try to add one or two receivers in free agency. They currently have only three on the roster: DK Metcalf, Roman Wilson, and Ben Skowronek. They need upgrades this offseason, and one possible option is Darnell Mooney. He is a proven veteran who should not require an expensive contract. Mooney can move around the lineup and provide reliable starting snaps.

Patrick Ricard, FB

It would be surprising to see Connor Heyward leave in free agency, but the Steelers could still use an upgrade at fullback. Many fans want the team to prioritize other needs, but adding a fullback could elevate their rushing attack. Patrick Ricard has been one of the best players at his role for a long time. The veteran should not cost much and could provide valuable help on offense and on special teams.

Andre Cisco, S

Adding to the safety position is something the team should consider this offseason.

They have Jalen Ramsey and DeShon Elliott in the mix, but they could still use a true ball hawk in the secondary. Andre Cisco could be an affordable starting option. He has not played at a high level over the past two years, but he has shown the ability to create turnovers in the past. Cisco could end up being a boom or bust type of free agent.

Jordan Stout, P

Never rule out possible additions on special teams, and that includes at punter. Corliss Waitman did a solid job this past season, but there may be better options. Jordan Stout should be at the top of their list, depending on his asking price. He has plenty of experience punting in the tough weather of the AFC North. Stout could be a strong addition for the Steelers as they try to improve their punting unit.
