With the ship sinking on the Pittsburgh Steelers this early into the season, it's time to look ahead. Despite a 6-6 record, the team is still in a position to compete for its division. This week, as they prepare to face the Baltimore Ravens, it feels like the entire season is hanging in the balance. It won't be an easy task to overcome, and most of Steelers Nation feels hopeless.
For those of you who feel defeated and want this team to lose for the remainder of the campaign, you should be looking ahead to the NFL Draft. There are plenty of unknowns surrounding this team as they sit in the darkness of their own doing. The franchise has produced strong draft classes on paper, but it hasn't led to much success on the field yet. That's because they need a franchise quarterback.
Maybe Mike Tomlin will return next year, maybe not.
In any case, Pittsburgh requires a long-term strategy for its quarterback position. There aren't too many quality prospects sitting behind Fernando Mendoza, Dante Moore, and Ty Simpson. Odds are, even if all three of those top choices declare for the draft, the Steelers wouldn't have a shot at taking one. It could push them toward a boom-or-bust candidate like LaNorris Sellers.
Pittsburgh Steelers routine interest in QB LaNorris Sellers could lead to sparks at NFL Draft
According to Alan Saunders of Steelers Now, the franchise continues to keep close tabs on the South Carolina quarterback. It's unknown if Sellers will declare for the 2026 NFL Draft or return to college. Some experts believe he will transfer and try to elevate his draft stock for next year. South Carolina had a disappointing season, but Sellers’ raw talent is evident, making him an appealing option.
Pittsburgh sent scouts to Sellers’ most recent game against the Clemson Tigers, where they watched one of their top draft targets face off against potential future quarterback Cade Klubnik. Either player could develop into a franchise quarterback, but neither appears ready at this moment. Both will need time to grow before reaching the elite talent the Steelers are seeking.

The Gamecocks suffered a significant loss to Clemson, 28-14. All the pressure remains on Sellers while he is at South Carolina. He doesn't have much help around him to win football games. He has the potential to become the best quarterback in the draft, but he must work out some problem areas in his game. He can’t afford to turn the ball over and must realize he can’t win games by himself.
Sellers continues to impress this season despite his team's 4-8 record.
He produced 13 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and five rushing touchdowns. His production took a step back from last year, which got him into draft conversations. If the Steelers can't take one of the top signal callers and Sellers is available, they have shown enough interest to take a gamble on him. He could be their guy if he goes to the NFL.
