There are few things more beautiful than a well-thought-out plan. Watching the vision unfold in real time is a sight to witness. The Pittsburgh Steelers understand this season is about the here and now. That shouldn’t take away the shine from Drew Allar’s development, however. After a slew of impressive training camp performances, it's easy to believe head coach Mike McCarthy is cooking with fire.
Especially if the young gunslinger continues to flourish under Aaron Rodgers’ tutelage. His performance during Pittsburgh’s Saturday Night Lights showcased raw ability with a splash of the All-Pro’s signature touch on deep completions. The showing was impressive, and the rookie did not hesitate to give his mentor a few flowers.
“That’s something I’ve been working on, the trajectory of the throw,” Allar told Penn Live reporter Nick Farabaugh. “I picked Aaron’s brain on it a week ago.”
And the proof was in the pudding.
Allar connected with Robert Tonyan on a 30-yard fade during a 7-on-7 period Saturday evening. And the bombs didn’t stop there. The former Penn State quarterback also connected with DK Metcalf and Brandon Smith on absolute dots.
Fans’ roar created a frenzy. And I believe the performance is worth the hype.
The Pittsburgh Steelers need Drew Allar to spend as much time with Aaron Rodgers as possible
Solidifying the quarterback of the future is more than a side quest for the Steelers. It’s caused the front office to invest in raw gunslingers during consecutive draft classes. We understand Aaron Rodgers will be the man under center for the upcoming campaign. But predicting who will lead the franchise after he retires is a toss-up. Despite being content with Rodgers’ leadership, fans are still anxious to see what happens when he finally retires for good.
Luckily, Allar is easing concerns. His development throughout Pittsburgh’s training camp is hard to ignore. The throws are impressive, and his willingness to compete is a good sign for the franchise. Sure, Allar’s accuracy and decision-making were questionable heading into his rookie campaign. But a few lessons with Rodgers are helping the young QB turn the corner quickly.
At the end of his collegiate career, Allar tallied 7,402 passing yards and 61 touchdowns. He’s a talented quarterback with plenty more to learn.
But I'm certain the padawan will find answers with Rodgers by his side.
