This is bad news (and even worse timing).

The Pittsburgh Steelers are a step closer to closing the book on any hopes of Aaron Rodgers wearing black and gold in 2025, at least for now. On Thursday afternoon—exactly one week from the start of the NFL Draft—the veteran quarterback made a much-anticipated appearance on The Pat McAfee Show to discuss his current mindset and future in the NFL. What Steelers fans heard wasn’t promising.

“I’m open to anything and attached to nothing,” Rodgers said, summarizing a vague and noncommittal attitude about his football future. While the statement sparked plenty of headlines, it sent a clear message to Pittsburgh: don’t wait for answers.

Rodgers admitted that he hasn’t agreed to terms with the Steelers or any other franchise, and more importantly, he’s still handling personal matters that could delay a decision.

Respectfully, the Steelers can’t afford to put their season plans on pause. The front office has immediate needs, and quarterback remains the most pressing one. With the 2025 NFL Draft just days away, this recent Rodgers update serves as a final nudge to move forward, with or without the future Hall of Famer.

Aaron Rodgers' lack of commitment solidifies the Pittsburgh Steelers' 2025 NFL Draft agenda

Rodgers’ vague timeline and lack of commitment felt like a gut punch to P Steelers fans who hoped for a splash signing. But in some ways, it also provided clarity. Pittsburgh must now go all-in on securing its future quarterback through the draft.

The Steelers have already done their homework. Reports confirm the franchise has met with multiple top quarterback prospects, including Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart, and Kyle McCord. All three signal-callers are talented in different ways and could be available at varying points in the draft.

Sanders, in particular, is viewed as a potential first-round selection — one the Steelers may need to trade up to secure. Dart and McCord, meanwhile, may fall to Day 2 or 3 and present more developmental upside.

Regardless of how the draft board shakes out, the Rodgers situation makes it abundantly clear that Pittsburgh needs to act now. Waiting around for an aging quarterback to “figure it out” only delays the much-needed rebuilding process. The team had already signed DK Metcalf and has a potential star in George Pickens—weapons that need a leader to deliver the ball.

The time is now for Omar Khan and the Steelers front office to stop hedging bets and start building for the future. Rodgers’ indecision may have slammed one door shut, but it’s opened another wide open: the 2025 NFL Draft.
