Ben Roethlisberger is buying the hype around Steelers’ young QB duo

Don’t let anyone fool you. Preseason action can be just as exciting as the main campaign. Especially if you have two young, determined quarterbacks. Well, Pittsburgh Steelers fans are certainly reaping the benefits. A 28-9 win over the Green Bay Packers on Thursday displayed the promise both Will Howard and Drew possess.

And the performance was one to remember. Both gunslingers put on a show. It even left former franchise quarterback Ben Roethlisberger excited for the future

“I was really pleased with what I saw,” Roethlisberger shared on the Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger podcast. “I’m extremely excited about both young quarterbacks,” he concluded.

And frankly, I am too.

A win before the regular season begins benefits all involved. Not only did Mike McCarthy’s squad begin the campaign on the right foot. They also saw evidence that a risky investment could yield dividends.

It began when Will Howard subbed out Mason Rudolph in the second quarter. The former Ohio State Buckeye managed the offense well. He also limited turnovers while keeping the sticks moving. At times, Howard relied on his feet to extend plays. His innovations kept drives alive and gained the attention of one of Pittsburgh’s most revered QBs.

“I thought his pocket movement was really good," Roethlisberger explained. “I thought he got rid of the ball when he had to. He’s definitely mobile.”

Smart decisions paired with quick feet helped the sixth-round pick finish the outing with 86 passing yards and a 77.8 completion percentage. Sure, Howard was sacked once. But he also averaged 9.6 yards per completion and a 106.5 passer rating.

“Obviously he didn’t disappoint,” Roethlisberger implored.

Ben Roethlisberger believes Pittsburgh Steelers have a bright future with Drew Allar and Will Howard

And neither did Drew Allar. Truthfully, the third-round pick was the highlight of a successful evening. He stunned fans with his poise and accuracy. With McCarthy’s play-calling, the kid was untouchable. The combination resulted in 153 passing yards and two touchdown passes.

“I feel the same way about Drew [Allar],” Roethlisberger continued. “I was pleasantly surprised. I didn’t know what to expect.”

But could anyone have predicted Thursday night’s events?

I don’t think so. But I am glad it happened. And more should follow in the upcoming weeks. Pittsburgh hits the road to take on the New York Jets during Week 2 of the preseason. It's another chance for Allar and Howard to shine. And fans are not the only ones wanting another dose of the gifted gunslingers.

“If Aaron is not going to play again, I would strongly consider starting Will or Drew; I don’t care which one it is,” Big Ben confessed. “I want them to get more reps against better players.”

That sounds like a great idea.

More reps will help Allar and Howard gain more experience. And with Rodgers’ mentorship, the sky is the limit. Sure, it ultimately means Mason Rudolph will see fewer reps. But we know what he’s capable of. It’s time to consider the future. And Ben Roethlisberger agrees; the Steelers quarterback room looks extremely bright.
