The Pittsburgh Steelers currently have a lot going on in their quarterback room, but the team doesn’t know who will be the starting quarterback. While everyone awaits an answer to that question, all eyes are on veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers and rookie QB Drew Allar.

The Steelers, and the rest of the NFL world, are waiting to see if Rodgers will return for another season or if he’ll retire. If he does return, he will be the starter in Pittsburgh this season, but if he doesn’t, the focus will turn to the quarterback room of Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, and Allar.

While Rudolph or Howard will likely emerge as the starter in Rodgers’ absence, Allar will be the most intriguing quarterback of the group. He’s a polarizing player with some very clear talents and concerns, and Pittsburgh has signed up to develop him.

Draft analyst Jordan Reid and Steelers reporter Brooke Pryor recently highlighted what Allar needs to develop, and how that development will likely look in Pittsburgh. Reid explained that the Steelers have to improve Allar’s footwork, mechanics, accuracy issues, and decision-making in big moments. While that seems like a lot, the analyst believes the team will have a really good quarterback if they can accomplish that goal.

The question is, how will that development take place? Pryor explains that the answer could all depend on what Aaron Rodgers decides. If the future Hall of Famer returns to the team, Allar’s development will take place in the shadows. The reporter says the rookie quarterback will only see the field in the preseason, and if filling in because of injuries.

If Rodgers doesn’t return, though, Pryor says all bets are off. There’s no telling who will start, and how much any of the quarterbacks could play. However, that could be a good thing for Allar and the Steelers. For Allar, he could have the opportunity to get real game reps that help him grow. For Pittsburgh, it would be able to evaluate the young passers on the roster before the 2027 Draft.

At this point in the offseason, no one really knows what’s going to happen, and that includes the Steelers. The team could have just one starter all season long, or the team could cycle through multiple guys as the franchise seeks a long-term answer.
