Acrisure Stadium is where Pittsburgh Steelers fans need to be on Sunday. A matchup against the Atlanta Falcons is the first real test for Mike McCarthy’s regime. Preparing for the season opener is a challenge the new staff cannot embrace lightly. Luckily, Pittsburgh now knows who will lead Kevin Stefanski’s offense.
And it could strengthen their odds of winning.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Tua Tagovailoa will be the Falcons’ starting quarterback for Week 1. The former first-round pick (2020) relocated to Atlanta after six seasons with the Dolphins. His 76 starts led to impressive campaigns, but zero playoff victories.
Still, his 18,166 passing yards and 120 touchdowns show promise. Well, enough for Stefanski to grant the struggling gunslinger a fresh start.
“I think every decision I make for the football team, you’re taking in all the information available to you,” Atlanta’s head coach explained to reporters. He also mentioned that Michael Pennix Jr. will be inactive against Pittsburgh.
So the Birds are left to rely on Tagovailoa. That’s the perfect appetizer for Patrick Graham’s defense to begin a new era.

Throughout the offseason, players raved about new philosophies brewing within Pittsburgh. It was as if a ray of light shone over the organization since Mike Tomlin’s exit. At first, I thought the responses were a result of the honeymoon phase. But eventually, the innovations grew clearer.
Players were buying in. And the results showed throughout the preseason.
Sure, McCarthy’s offensive adjustments were a notable difference. But Patrick Graham’s defense displayed the most promise. Simulated blitzes and versatile formations gave fans a sample size of what’s to come. It also spells bad news for an opposing quarterback hoping to jumpstart his career in a highly anticipated game.
Experience will be Tagovailoa’s best friend Sunday afternoon. He’s faced Pittsburgh twice, splitting the appearances. The last face-off in 2025 resulted in a 28-15 loss. He accounted for 253 passing yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.
The stats are decent. But a lot has changed since the last meeting. Last season, Pittsburgh allowed 360.8 yards per game (28th) and 5.5 yards per play (20th). It opened the door for Graham to take over as defensive coordinator.
A necessary pivot while on the road to success.
Since then, Pittsburgh’s defense has shown glimpses of a transformation. Yes, it was only a preseason sample size. But it displayed consistency, communication, and awareness. Three things needed to defeat a motivated but unreliable team.
Veteran cornerback Jamel Dean is someone I expect to help address previous weaknesses. Asante Samuel Jr., Jalen Ramsey, T.J. Watt, and Alex Highsmith will also ensure Tagovailoa has a long afternoon.
Changes throughout the offseason and a decent preseason performance suggest the franchise is heading in the right direction. The Pittsburgh Steelers already have home-field advantage Sunday afternoon. But with Tua Tagovailoa leading the Falcons, they’ve earned another edge. I believe he’s the first mouse that will be fed to a pack of lions.
And these cats better not play with their food.
