News broke last night that Pittsburgh Steelers assistant general manager Andy Weidl is officially interviewing for the Falcons' vacant GM job. Despite so much change going on in Pittsburgh, it seems like even more could come if Weidl takes this opportunity.
For the Steelers, it would be a calamity if Weidl were to walk.
Brought in with Omar Khan to assist on the draft side of things, Weidl has been an underrated gem in Pittsburgh. He has recentered the team’s draft focus on important positions and maximizing picks.
It would be a massive blow to this franchise if Weidl were to walk this offseason.
The Pittsburgh Steelers need to keep Andy Weidl on staff
Coming from the Philadelphia Eagles, the Steelers' draft priorities flipped the moment Weidl walked through the door. Suddenly, the defensive and offensive lines became the top priorities for this team, and the investments have progressively paid off.
Frankly, the draft has been one of the strengths of this team in recent years. 2023 saw this team hit on almost all of their picks. Broderick Jones is still a question mark, while seventh-round pick Cory Trice is likely out of chances, but the rest of the class has been amazing.

We saw similar stories in 2024 and 2025. One of the reasons this team has remained competitive is that the crop of recent draft picks elevated this team.
Weidl is a big reason for this. While Khan gets the final say, he has given a lot of the draft work to Weidl. He is the linchpin for these strong draft classes.
It makes sense that Atlanta (or anyone, for that matter) would consider Weidl for their GM role. He seemingly has the draft nailed down already. That is valuable for every franchise.
For a Steelers team already in limbo, though, it would help to have an extra year or two of strong draft picks. There will be so much change to this team in 2026; keeping the GM room stable would be ideal.
Time will tell if Weidl gets the job in Atlanta. That said, the Steelers need to keep their fingers crossed that his time to get promoted from assistant isn’t this year. He has quietly made a massive impact on this team, and losing him would be a massive blow.
