It took more than two months into free agency for the Pittsburgh Steelers to lose out on veteran defensive tackle Isaiahh Loudermilk. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Loudermilk has signed with the Minnesota Vikings. He never fully developed into the player the Steelers had hoped for and will now have to earn his place in Minnesota.
Losing out on Isaiahh Loudermilk’s potential return to Pittsburgh may ultimately benefit both sides.
During his time with the Steelers, he primarily served as a role player who contributed against the run but was never someone the team could rely on in a larger role. His departure could prompt the Steelers to give younger players along the defensive line more opportunities and allow them to take on greater responsibilities moving forward.
Several younger players along the defensive line have struggled to carve out roles behind established veterans. With Loudermilk no longer competing for a roster spot after signing with the Vikings, some of those younger options could begin to emerge. However, if they fail to take a step forward, the absence of Loudermilk as a reliable depth piece could prove costly for the team.
Pittsburgh Steelers free agent DT Isaiahh Loudermilk's departure leads to youth movement
Names such as Yahya Black, Logan Lee, and Gabriel Rubio now have the opportunity to compete not only for roster spots but also for meaningful roles on defense.
All three were selected by the Steelers in the mid to late rounds of the draft and must prove their value. While some bring limited experience, Rubio is entering his rookie season. With Isaiahh Loudermilk no longer in the picture, each has a clearer path to establish himself and make an impact.
Pittsburgh saw Yahya Black play effectively as a rookie last season. He should be expected to take on a larger role this year and take a step forward in his development. Black was their fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and already showed he has more talent than Loudermilk produced. Expect Black to force his way into a bigger role in the defensive line rotation this season.
Logan Lee is one of the players who needs to show significant progress or risk seeing his NFL career come to an end. He played his first season with the Steelers last year after missing his entire rookie campaign in 2024 due to injury. A sixth-round pick, Lee is quickly running out of time to prove himself. The Steelers will need to see clear improvement, or he could struggle to secure a spot on the roster.
Steelers Nation and many others were surprised when the team selected Gabriel Rubio in the sixth round of this year’s draft.
He was not widely graded on most draft boards, which means the rookie enters the offseason with a lot to prove. There is a clear path for him to make the roster, especially with Isaiahh Loudermilk no longer in the picture. Rubio must validate what the Steelers saw in him, or the selection could be viewed negatively over time.
