It was recently announced that the New York Giants are releasing running back Najee Harris. This is a shocking move, as the former Pittsburgh Steelers first-round pick seemed to be gaining a bigger role within the Giants' offense. For one reason or another, New York decided to end their business with the running back, and it spells doom for the player.
The chances of him making an impact this season for another team appear to be rather slim at the moment.
Injuries have hampered Harris since he left the Steelers in March of 2025. His time with the Los Angeles Chargers was cut short due to a torn Achilles. That forced him into a tough rehab situation, but he eventually landed with the Giants this past summer. He went from a roster hopeful to someone gaining significant opportunities on offense as recently as this past weekend.
Pittsburgh clearly made the right choice by letting Najee Harris go in free agency over a year ago. Jaylen Warren has become a star player for them, and Harris probably would've cost a decent chunk of change to re-sign at that time. His recent release and past injury concerns have put Harris's NFL future in jeopardy. Don't be shocked if he struggles to land another shot at making a comeback.
Former Pittsburgh Steelers RB Najee Harris might struggle to find another job this season
Things change in a hurry in the NFL, as Najee Harris used to be one of the most consistent running backs in the league during his time with the Steelers. Oh, how the mighty have fallen in a hurry as his time after leaving Pittsburgh has been dreadful. His season-ending injury with the Chargers seems to have slowed down his opportunities.
There are little to no avenues for him to get back to the level of starter that he was with the Steelers.
It was a surprise to see Harris get released by the Giants after starting for them against the Saints. Cam Skattebo was in the doghouse, and it allowed Harris a chance to finally gain the reins on the starting gig. Unfortunately for the former Steelers first-round pick, that didn't work out well. The Giants gave more snaps to the running backs behind him on the depth chart as the game wore on.
At the end of the day, Harris only totaled 99 rushing yards off of 31 attempts with New York this season. Those are some poor numbers, and with the Giants having a couple of other options at the position outside of Skattebo, it was becoming clear that Harris would have a tough time regaining a bigger role. Losing his starting job during one game just shows you how fast his career has unraveled.
Perhaps another NFL team will be looking at Najee Harris as an option to fill in for them if their starting back gets injured long-term.
That being said, the running back position remains a spot where most teams could replace them fairly easily. The Steelers made the right choice by letting Harris go, but the former fan favorite has unfortunately found out that it's tough to have a successful career after leaving Pittsburgh.
