The time comes when all NFL players will eventually hang up their cleats for the last time. For former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Joshua Dobbs, the end of his NFL journey may be nearing.
Dobbs was a fourth-round pick by the Steelers in a talented 2017 draft class. One year later, Mason Rudolph was taken in the third round by Pittsburgh. Dobbs was eventually traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars before returning to Pittsburgh for the 2020 season and staying until his contract expired in 2021.
Now 31 years old, Dobbs remains a free agent, and the end of his NFL career could be in sight.
Former Pittsburgh Steelers QB Joshua Dobbs may have already played his final NFL snaps
After leaving the Steelers after the 2021 season, Dobbs spent time with the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, and Tennessee Titans in 2023. In Tennessee, Dobbs made two starts, throwing for 411 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
The peak of his NFL career came in 2023 in a short stint with the Minnesota Vikings.
After leading the Cardinals to a 1-7 record, Dobbs was traded from Arizona to Minnesota after Week 8 of the 2023 season. Dobbs was traded on October 31 and had just days to turn around and prepare to start for the Vikings on November 5. He later admitted he did not even know the names of many of his teammates when his name was called.
Dobbs led the Vikings to back-to-back wins in Week 9 and Week 10, combining for 426 passing yards, two touchdowns, and a 96.2 passer rating to go with 100 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. However, he would eventually fall out of favor and was a healthy scratch for the Vikings late in the season.
Most recently, Dobbs was the backup quarterback for Drake Maye on the New England Patriots, where he appeared in four games, completing seven of 10 passes for 65 yards and three first downs.
In total, Dobbs has been with 10 of the NFL's 32 teams since joining the league in 2017.
Dobbs graduated from Tennessee with an Aerospace Engineering degree, so if the end of his football journey is on the horizon, he has options in his post-football career. Dobbs is also excellent in front of the camera and has the talent to pursue a career in football media when his playing days are through.
Josh Dobbs offered some highlight moments for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the NFL. When the sun sets on his playing career, he'll be remembered for some of his splash-play, duel-threat ability he was able to offer when thrust into action on a moment's notice.
