The Pittsburgh Steelers escaped Tampa Bay with a win over the Buccaneers, but it was anything but pretty. Aaron Rodgers and the offense struggled mightily for the first three quarters, as the offensive line was shaky at best.
But even with an ugly offensive showing, Germie Bernard's breakout performance just gave Steelers fans a reason to believe in the future at the wide receiver position.
Fans have been calling for Bernard, the team's second-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, to get more involved in the offense. They got their wish in Week 6. With fellow wideouts Roman Wilson and Michael Pittman Jr. out with injuries, Bernard got his chance to shine and never looked back.
From the gate, Bernard was heavily involved an otherwise unspectacular passing game. The rookie worked the slot and the boundary while moving the chains with his ability to create after the catch.
His best and most important play came in overtime, when Bernard took a pass in the flats from quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the endzone for an overtime touchdown that would ultimately seal the victory.

By the end of the game, Bernard finished with 11 receptions on 12 targets for 83 yards and a score. Bernard quietly made history by becoming the rookie wide receiver to earn 11 receptions in a single game during his rookie year (2021 first-round pick Najee Harris earned 14 in a game, but he's a running back).
Bernard also recorded the most receptions in a single game for a rookie while playing with Aaron Rodgers over the quarterback's 22-year NFL career.
The Pittsburgh Steelers might have something special in rookie WR Germie Bernard
From a physical perspective, there's nothing that really 'wows' about Bernard's profile. At 6'1'' and 206 pounds, Bernard has solid size and a sturdy frame, but he doesn't have an elite gear to burn defenders down the field or the twitch to make defenders look silly in space.
However, what he does have is outstanding natural all-around ability at the receiver position.
Bernard is simply a football player when it comes to toughness, savvy, and fluidity. He's already the best route-runner on the team, and he clearly looks like the go-to target this franchise has been lacking for years.
This remarkable showing against the Buccaneers came one week after Bernard earned six receptions on nine targets for 80 yards in the 34-22 win over the Indianapolis Colts. Once he finally earned the opportunity to work with the starting offense, Bernard has quietly been on a rampage.
The rookie's breakout performance in Week 6 doesn't guarantee him success the rest of the way, but it's an incredible sign. More than anything, Bernard offers Steelers fans hope that they may actually have the go-to option in the passing game that they've been looking for.
Even with the slow start to the season after beginning the year as the Steelers' WR4, Bernard is on a 17-game pace to earn 68 receptions, 643 yards, and three touchdowns. These are excellent numbers considering his rookie status.
However, with a few more games like what we just witnessed against the Buccaneers, he may even be able to push for a 1,000-yard rookie campaign (assuming he stays healthy and doesn't get demoted when Wilson and Pittman return).
After what we just saw, there is zero reason for the Steelers to ever move Bernard back to the bench. Thanks to his frame, natural football ability, and route-running chops, he should be the Steelers' go-to receiver the rest of the way.
The Steelers' offense still has a ton of work to do, and there's no question that Aaron Rodgers is limited. But Germie Bernard's breakout performance in Week 6 certainly inspires hope for the future of the wide receiver position in Pittsburgh.
