It took only one game, but the Pittsburgh Steelers might've located their solution to their wide receiver problem. Everyone thought there must be someone on the trade market who could help upgrade their roster, but that might not be the case after all. The Steelers' Week 1 shootout with the New York Jets could've just shown the fans that their solution is already on the team.

Calvin Austin III produced a fantastic performance against the Jets, despite missing most of training camp and the entire preseason. He appeared destined to start the season slowly, especially given how Roman Wilson performed throughout the preseason process.

It was a game full of big plays by both offenses, and Pittsburgh wasn't afraid to throw the ball to different targets.

Aaron Rodgers turned back the clock and played a magnificent game, even though he had no run game to help balance his pass attack. His pass protection was suspect at best, but the aging gunslinger carried the offense on his back and found ways to make plays. He favored Austin in big-time situations, which could take the receiver position off the to-do list once and for all.

Calvin Austin III might be the Pittsburgh Steelers savior at the wide receiver spot

Austin put on a show in New York, despite only having four receptions on the day. He was fantastic in situational football. He made several big plays in critical situations of the game. If he keeps this up throughout the season, he should have a big payday once he hits free agency this offseason. He still has a long way to go before becoming a solidified WR2, but he has shown promise.

Wilson might have been the favorite for the job heading into the season based on his preseason success, but the coaching staff has been praising Austin leading up to the season. But his injury setback put everything into limbo. The veteran receiver found ways to contribute effectively on offense and made the most of his limited opportunities.

Pittsburgh should remain on the lookout for trade options, but Austin could be the season-long fix.

Both offenses put up plenty of points in a high-scoring game. While the Steelers' defense faltered throughout much of the matchup, their offense exceeded expectations by scoring 34 points. Austin was a key contributor, making several catches that helped shift the game's momentum. He has earned the right to get key chances heading into Week 2 of the season.

The fourth-year playmaker had one of his best outings as a member of the Steelers. He produced 70 receiving yards and a touchdown off of only four receptions. With a solid season in 2024, one would expect him to only grow off those numbers. If Rodgers keeps playing like he did against the Jets, Austin might be one of his favorite targets, which will inflate his production.
