No one truly knew what to expect when Drew Allar went into his preseason debut with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a high third-round pick, but he was clearly a big-time project at the quarterback position. Don't count him as a future franchise quarterback yet, despite his impressive performance against the Green Bay Packers.
The hype only continues to inflate to peak levels for the rookie.
Although training camp hasn't been a sore spot for Allar to date, he has shown hiccups along the way. His elite skill set, coupled with a strong arm, has shown up countless times this summer, but Allar has also made poor decisions with the ball in his hands in practice as well.
His inconsistencies were one of the reasons why he fell in the draft, but Pittsburgh has their blinders on and have high hopes for the player.
You cannot put too much stock in the preseason, as Kenny Pickett exposed a few years back. This is not true football, but with that said, Drew Allar did produce an impressive performance. He showed that he can move around and sink throws when necessary. He scored three touchdowns, two with his arm and one with his legs.
Steelers Nation should be cautiously optimistic after that showing.

The praise for Allar's debut is warranted, but you cannot deem him the heir apparent to Aaron Rodgers at this moment. It was a strong preseason debut for the quarterback, but he faced off against backup players, some of whom won't even make the Packers' 53-man roster. It was refreshing to witness a gunslinger take some shots downfield, which could be heightening the Allar hype.
Fans would be wise to temper their expectations of the rookie moving forward. Although he had a strong outing, don't be surprised if he makes mistakes along the way. During his time at Penn State, he had strong showings against lesser opponents but struggled when the lights became the brightest against the better teams in college football.
We will see if that continues in the NFL.
In one game, Allar might've created an impressive stat line against a poor Maryland team and then followed that up with a mind-numbing flub against the Ohio State Buckeyes. Hopefully, the Steelers can locate a fix to Allar's issues from his college football days. The kid truly has talent; he must become more consistent with his all-around game and fix some mechanics along the way.
We can all agree that the new quarterback had an impressive preseason game against the Packers, but don't go buying Drew Allar jerseys just yet. He has a long way to go before Pittsburgh crowns him as their new franchise signal-caller.
Things could still regress for the player as the preseason pushes onward. It will be interesting to see if he can continue this hype train during the next two games.
