The Pittsburgh Steelers will be watching closely as the quarterbacks and wide receivers work out on Day 3 of the NFL Combine. With Aaron Rodgers still deciding what his future holds, QB could be in play as early as the first round. Receiver is perhaps their most pressing need, with zero proven options on the roster outside of DK Metcalf.
The Combine matters less for QBs than maybe any other position group, but a special performance from a prospect can sometimes change their outlook. For Arkansas Razorback QB Taylen Green, his 40-yard dash just opened up eyes across the league.
His 4.36 time ranks near the very top of the all-time list for the QB position, and he did it at over 6'6" and 227 pounds. He even broke the Combine record for QBs in the vertical leap (43.5") and broad jump (11'2").
That kind of athleticism is hard to ignore, and he may have just solidified himself as the top Day 3 developmental QB for teams to target.
The Pittsburgh Steelers should consider targeting Taylen Green as a developmental QB
At the end of the day, speed at QB doesn't matter unless the player is good enough at playing the position. We have seen plenty of high-level athletes who played QB in college not make it at the next level. Green certainly has all the traits, including a powerful arm and the size teams covet.
His tape at Arkansas, however, is a rollercoaster. For every incredible throw or explosive run, there were just as many inaccurate throws or bad decisions.
He needs a strong coaching staff that is willing to give him time to learn and grow behind an established starter. The Steelers mostly fit that description, assuming Rodgers or a different veteran QB ends up as their starter in 2026. Head coach Mike McCarthy made a big deal out of his supposed ability to develop QBs, so why wouldn't he have an interest in working with a freak athlete like Green?
Well, McCarthy may not believe in Green's accuracy and overall consistency enough to consider him a fit for his offense. QBs can improve their accuracy once in the NFL, of course, but it's not often you see a massive leap in that area compared to their college days.
Still, plenty of teams will want to bring in someone with his gifts. I don't want to disrespect him before he even gets the chance to prove himself as a QB, but if all else fails, he would be a fascinating wide receiver convert down the line. Why not take a shot on Day 3 if you are the Steelers?
