The Pittsburgh Steelers really felt the effects of not having George Pickens in Week 14. In a must-have game against the Cleveland Browns, the Steelers were without their top receiver. This led to tremendous difficulty moving the football and putting points on the board early.
This forced their defense to carry the weight of the game on their shoulders. After scoring just three points in the first quarter, Pittsburgh was desperate for a spark, and the Steelers' defense delivered.
With the Browns looking for another scoring drive, defensive tackle Keeanu Benton picked off a Jameis Winston screen pass and returned it back into Browns territory.
This game-changing play quickly resulted in a touchdown drive for the Pittsburgh Steelers, giving Mike Tomlin's team a 10-7 lead in the second quarter.
Steelers defense exposes Jameis Winston's fatal weakness
Earlier in the game, backup Steelers safety Damontae Kazee nearly made Winston pay with a dropped interception in the middle of the field. Pittsburgh's defense soon turned Winston's aggressiveness into a game-wrecking splash play.
Winton once threw over 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in the same season. Though he has the size and tools every team covets in a quarterback, it's his questionable decision-making that forced him to be a backup quarterback in the NFL for the past several seasons.
Winston is outperforming expectations and he possesses big-play ability, but if the Steelers are to take advantage of this matchup, they need to make Winston pay for his over-aggressiveness. Keeanu Benton did just that with his critical splash play in the second quarter of Week 14.
The Steelers can't allow a 3-9 Browns team to sweep them this year, and game-changing plays like this will help ensure Pittsburgh emerges victorious against an inferior AFC North opponent.
