When the Pittsburgh Steelers agreed to terms with DK Metcalf last offseason, it felt like an answered prayer. The front office’s need for a primary wideout haunted the franchise for consecutive seasons. But after a year with the two-time Pro Bowler, it’s fair that fans' expectations are still unmet.Â
And according to Jeremy Fowler’s top wide receiver rankings, Metcalf’s peers aren’t impressed either. NFL Executives, coaches, and scouts did not include the former second-round pick in the conversation. Yes, Mike McCarthy has an X-Factor at WR1, but how will he respond knowing he has room for improvement?
The bar is set high for Metcalf. But why would it be any other way? Pittsburgh’s front office penned a four-year, $132 million deal to better the odds of scoring points.
But with more money comes more responsibility.Â
In 2025, Metcalf failed to answer Pittsburgh’s call to become the primary option. Sure, he earned 850 receiving yards in 15 games, but that is not as impressive as the production from previous seasons.
In 2024, the former Ole Miss standout earned 992 receiving yards and 66 receptions, without leaving his team to serve a two-game suspension.Â
DK Metcalf owes the Pittsburgh Steelers more in the upcoming campaign
And the timing was horrible.
An altercation with a fan during a Week 16 matchup against the Detroit Lions cost the Steelers more than two games without their primary wide receiver. It left the Steelers entering an AFC North matchup against the Browns without the firepower necessary to clinch a divisional title.Â
Pittsburgh lost to Cleveland, but clinched a playoff berth with a win against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 18. They did it without Metcalf, but that doesn’t mean his help wouldn’t have made clinching the division easier.Â
Poor timing and a horrible decision also cost the experienced veteran more than playing time. It ended his regular season early and limited his impact. Those things matter when being considered for rankings among the league’s elite. Unfortunately, Metcalf did not have the stats or accolades due to his own actions.Â
It's unacceptable, especially when considering the average annual value of wideouts considered by the NFL's elite. Drake London ($35.26M), Justin Jefferson ($35M), and CeeDee Lamb ($34M) earn more than Metcalf ($33M). But they also made honorable mention or ranked among the esteemed WR group.
Jeremy Fowler’s top-10 rankings are not a personal blow at Metcalf. But it is a tough pill to swallow for Pittsburgh fans. Not only did George Pickens make an appearance ( No. 7), but the Steelers were not represented.
Ill feelings are validated knowing Metcalf is among the highest-paid targets in the league. But it’s not too late for Mike McCarthy’s X-Factor to answer the call. Hopefully, the connection is clear and consistent.Â
