The Pittsburgh Steelers have glaring holes at the cornerback position, and with their current stance in the 2024 NFL Draft, addressing those needs through free agency seems like the most viable option.
The franchise is expected to use its 21st overall pick and remaining draft capital to improve the running back, wide receiver, and defensive line positions, deming the search for a lockdown corner and a free-agent scurry.
One potential solution could be Jaire Alexander, a two-time Pro Bowler who may soon find himself without a team. The Green Bay Packers have reportedly struggled to find a trade partner for their star cornerback, which could lead to his eventual release.
If that happens, the Steelers should be first in line to acquire him.
It’s no secret at this point, the Steelers are going to invest in a free agent cornerback.

This veteran must eliminate Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and company twice a year.
Jaire Alexander will be the best fit for this role once Green Bay releases him.

When making plays, Alexander is the type of cornerback every team covets. The former first-round pick out of Louisville has racked up 12 career interceptions since entering the league in 2018, proving himself as a true ballhawk. His aggressive coverage skills and exceptional ball-tracking ability make him a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks.
Jaire Alexander is the perfect free-agent cornerback for the Pittsburgh Steelers' defense
The Steelers are desperate, needing a high-level corner to pair with Joey Porter Jr. Alexander would fit that role perfectly. His ability to shadow No. 1 wide receivers and limit big plays would immediately improve Pittsburgh’s secondary.
While Alexander’s skill set is undeniable, his durability raises concerns. He has not played a full season since 2019, missing significant time due to various injuries. However, when healthy, he remains one of the best defensive backs in the NFL.
Pittsburgh will have multiple options when considering veteran free-agent cornerbacks. D.J. Reed and Darius Slay are also worthy prospects, but Alexander’s age (28) gives him an advantage over his older counterparts. The Steelers need a long-term solution, not just a short-term fix.
The Steelers’ defense has been their backbone for years, and adding a high-caliber corner like Alexander would solidify their secondary for multiple seasons. With their focus in the draft likely shifting toward offensive skill positions and the defensive line, free agency is the best avenue to fix the secondary.
If the Packers ultimately release Alexander, Pittsburgh must act quickly. His combination of talent, youth, and experience highlights him as an ideal target. Pairing him with Joey Porter Jr. could give the Steelers one of the most formidable cornerback duos in the league.
