Mike Tomlin could be pulling off one of his best tricks yet with Justin Fields and Russell Wilson

The Pittsburgh Steelers are 4-2, coming off of a dominating win over the Las Vegas Raiders and heading into a pivotal AFC matchup in prime time.

It's going to be Sunday Night Football against a 2-4 New York Jets team that's as motivated as they've been all season, especially after the recent acquisition of wide receiver Davante Adams, whom the Steelers were also in on.

Other than the Adams trade, this week, there have been many other storylines to follow that involve the Steelers. The biggest one, though, is of course at the quarterback position. This week, it's looked as if Justin Fields is going to be heading back to the bench in favor of Russell Wilson, who has been taking reps with the starters in practice.

Head coach Mike Tomlin hasn't directly come out and said Wilson is the starter, but his cryptic messages certainly have everyone leaning that way.

Tomlin is the head coach, therefore he should know best. As the longest-tenured head coach in the NFL, and for a reason, Tomlin is usually a sound mind. There haven't been many reasons why fans shouldn't trust his decision-making over the years, all things considered.

Has he had his faults? Sure, but he's still here, and he's a winning football coach, period.

Yet, it's not just Steelers fans who are wondering just what's going on this week with Tomlin and the quarterback room. There are tons of players (current and former), media members and of course, fans, who have taken to social media trying to figure out just why Tomlin would bench Fields under the current circumstances.

Is Mike Tomlin about to pull off the greatest smokescreen in Steelers history?

Look, at this point in the week, everyone seems to believe Fields is headed to the bench, even the man himself made a comment on the situation. To no one's surprise, Fields was extremely humble and honest in his reaction to the week's events.

Meanwhile, Wilson probably believes he's going to start. Heck, most of the Steelers media seem led to believe Wilson is going to start. It's a foregone conclusion, right?

Not so fast.

Tomlin has yet to officially name Wilson as the starter. He's given Wilson starting reps, sure. He's sent a message to Fields by doing so, even. But, an official decision has yet to be made.

What if we get to Sunday morning and Fields is announced as the starter for Sunday Night Football?

This is still well within the realm of possibilities. Tomlin's handling of the media and his personnel has always been done his way. He's remained himself, through and through. And, maybe this is simply Tomlin giving Fields a little extra motivation while also showing some respect to Wilson as the tenured veteran.

Wilson gets a chance to practice with the ones, this week, but ultimately Tomlin still opts to go with the guy who has the locker room's support. And all of this is not only to motivate Fields, show a little respect to Wilson, and give him a fair shot but also out of gamesmanship.

The Jets might think they're preparing for Wilson, all week long, but in reality, they'll need to be ready for either one.

Again, no official announcement has been made on the starter. Tomlin has yet to do so. Keep that in mind as this week continues to see reactions overreactions and plenty of speculation over the topic at hand.

Maybe, just maybe, we're going to be laughing about this on Sunday afternoon.
