Even if former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin returns to coaching, he doesn't have all the power to dictate things.

The Steelers saw their former HC resign following the 2025 season, a move that shocked nearly everyone. He was with the organization for 19 years and never had a losing season. Tomlin remains in high regard around the NFL, and if he decides to return to coaching, he could have several landing spots.

Pittsburgh has the final say on Tomlin's immediate future. He is under contract with the Steelers through the 2027 campaign, which means the club would have to facilitate a trade with another team if Tomlin wants another job. If the Steelers want to play hardball, they could simply deny Tomlin’s trade request and keep him under contract until his deal expires.

A trade is a possibility in the coming years, but don't be surprised if the former coach of Pittsburgh decides to stay out of the league.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers HC Mike Tomlin could have several interesting trade destinations

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

An obvious choice for Tomlin to return would be going to a warmer climate and a place where his NFL career began. His start in the league was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2001 as their defensive backs coach, and he could hold that time close to his heart. Tomlin would certainly love to return to Florida to continue his coaching career, and he is familiar with the quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Kansas City Chiefs

One intriguing possibility would be Andy Reid retiring and the Steelers sending Tomlin to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Given that Kansas City is in the same conference as Pittsburgh, the Chiefs would likely have to pay a steep price to acquire Tomlin’s contract. Around the league, this idea would be widely unpopular, as it would give the Chiefs an extended opportunity to continue their dynasty with Patrick Mahomes.

Washington Commanders

Tomlin might consider moving closer to his hometown for his next stop. The longtime Steelers head coach is originally from the Newport News, Virginia area. That is about three hours away from where the Washington Commanders play. They have Jayden Daniels at quarterback, and Tomlin could form their defense into a strong unit. It would represent something of a homecoming for him.

New York Jets

Keep both New York teams in mind here, but the Jets seem like a more likely trade destination for Tomlin.

They are desperate to create a winning culture, and that is what the former Steelers' top coach represents. He would certainly demand more control, just like what John Harbaugh got with the Giants. Pittsburgh should be able to increase the trade price to ship Tomlin over to New York.
