The Pittsburgh Steelers will kick off training camp next week, and it promises to be a competitive one in Latrobe. Several intriguing positional battles will take place as the Steelers try to find their best 53 players going into the season.

The camp battle that will likely receive the most national attention will be at wide receiver as Calvin Austin and Roman Wilson compete to be the No. 2 receiver opposite D.K. Metcalf. Austin is the front runner after having a career year in 2024, catching 36 passes for 548 yards and four touchdowns.

But Austin’s career did not start fast, as he did not play a single snap during his rookie season (2022). Even in Year 2, Austin caught only 17 passes and was a part-time player in Pittsburgh. It took him some time to grow into his role, and now he has a chance to be the every-down WR2 with Aaron Rodgers. And the growing belief is that he is ready to explode in this new-look offense in Pittsburgh.

Wilson will be following a similar path after playing just five snaps during his rookie season. The former Michigan star battled injuries all season long and was never able to make an impact in Year 1. But he is fully healthy going into training camp, and the expectation is that he’ll be the No. 3 receiver if he doesn’t beat Austin for the No. 2 job.
