With all 32 teams now in offseason mode, it is officially time to look ahead to the next chapter of the league year, which happens to come in just about a month when the new league year indeed begins.
Coming up first on the schedule is free agency, where the Pittsburgh Steelers are very likely to actively pursue a wide receiver. But, could they get their hands on one before the free agency period opens up?
There is a possibility of a few different trades happening before free agency kicks off as a number of big names are in the latest rumors. Speaking of those rumors, NFL insider James Palmer went live just a day after Super Bowl 59 to address some of those big names.
When it came to the Steelers, Palmer connected one notable name to the organization and, sure enough, it was a wide receiver.
San Francisco 49ers star wideout Deebo Samuel has been given permission to see a trade, and Palmer kicked off his Samuel segment with the Steelers.
"These are some landing spots that I think are intriguing ... I'm going to start with Pittsburgh," Palmer said.
Deebo Samuel landing with the Steelers makes all the sense in the world
"They've been looking for someone opposite of George Pickens ... Deebo fits the criteria, I think, for a couple of reasons," he continued.
Palmer detailed how the Steelers have been involved in the receiver trade market for a while now, which is nothing new to the fan base. He also reminded us of Arthur Smith's "infatuation" with Cordarrelle Patterson and hinted at the possibility of Samuel being an upgraded version of the aging return specialist.
More Steelers news:
Samuel would give the Steelers much more than what Patterson has been able to offer.
The insider also noted the idea that Pittsburgh could end up bringing back Justin Fields and, if they did that, Deebo would be a great "safety blanket" for Fields in multiple ways.
Samuel's contract will make things somewhat difficult, though. He is in the final year of a 3-year deal, but the numbers complicate things.
Unless he was designated as a post-June 1 trade, the 49ers would be left with over $15 million in dead money, per Over the Cap. If San Francisco traded him in a post-June 1 deal, they'd save $5 million.
If a deal could be worked out, then Samuel gives this offense a completely new dimension. The big question, though, is whether or not he can stay healthy. Injuries have become a problem later in his career, and some fans may have a hard time swallowing this deal strictly based on the health questions.
