The Athletic’s Mike DeFabo recently made a timely prediction that should have every Pittsburgh Steelers fan paying close attention.

According to DeFabo, Pittsburgh could finalize a contract extension with superstar edge rusher T.J. Watt sometime after the final preseason game but before the regular season opener.

“Given the way those negotiations unfolded and Watt’s history with hold-ins, odds are Watt will agree to a new contract that includes several years of guaranteed money sometime after the final preseason game and before the season opener,” DeFabo wrote.

Honestly, I wouldn’t be upset if that’s how it plays out. However, the longer the Steelers wait, the more it will cost them.

Let’s not dance around it: T.J. Watt is the most valuable player on this roster. He’s the emotional tone-setter, the physical force, and the guy who can single-handedly swing games. His seven Pro Bowl selections and four All-Pro honors say it all.

Since entering the NFL in 2017, Watt has compiled 108 sacks and 33 forced fumbles. That’s not just good — that’s Hall of Fame-level dominance.

He's not just a defensive weapon. He’s a game-changer. When he’s on the field, the entire team plays differently. He brings a swagger and intensity that defines the Steelers' identity — tough, relentless, and proud.

The Pittsburgh Steelers need to jump ahead of the TJ Watt extension before it's too late

In an offseason that’s seen pass rushers like Myles Garrett, Andrew Van Ginkel, and Maxx Crosby land lucrative new deals, it’s only right that Watt’s name comes up next.

If the Steelers want to show they truly value him, they need to match — or beat — the market. This isn’t just about stats. It’s about respect.

DeFabo seems to agree. “The question is, how many years will the Steelers guarantee, and does Watt become the NFL’s new highest-paid defensive player, surpassing Garrett?” he asked.

That’s the pressure point — and it’s only going to intensify as Week 1 draws closer. Pittsburgh doesn’t need this hanging over the locker room. They need Watt locked in, both mentally and financially, and ready to wreak havoc on opposing quarterbacks.

Watt has already done more than enough to prove his worth. The Steelers have built their defense around him — and rightly so. Now it’s time for ownership to step up and pay him like the cornerstone he is.

A blockbuster deal may be inevitable, but the sooner it's done, the better. This isn't just about keeping your best player happy — it’s about keeping your team competitive and your culture intact.

Let’s hope the front office agrees.
