For those of use fans that love watching the offseason unfold, Omar Khan dropped some major nuggets that have left fans excited. His press conference for the Pittsburgh Steelers at the combine has fans talking.
While a wide variety of quotes have already made their rounds, the one quote sticking with me is what Khan had to say about attacking the trenches in the offseason.
In short, his response feels like a disaster.
When asked if the Steelers planned on drafting in the trenches still, Khan seemed to indicate that the plan is to move away from that strategy. For a team that has invested heavily in both the offensive and defensive line in the past three drafts (and to great success), this feels like a massive blunder.
The Pittsburgh Steelers should still be focused on the trenches this offseason
While not in the same dire spot that the offensive and defensive line was over the past few seasons, both sides still need help.
On offense, the team has a clear need at left guard. While Spencer Anderson can slot in there, he needs competition, given his lack of success at guard.
How about offensive tackle? Khan also indicated that Broderick Jones has no timeline for a return from his neck injury. Dylan Cook looked good in limited action, but banking on him is just foolish.
The defensive line is more secure right now, but the long-term answers are up in the air. Assuming he returns, this will likely be Cam Heyward’s last ride. Keeanu Benton is in the final year of his rookie deal. You got solid snaps out of Derrick Harmon and Yahya Black, but both need to prove a lot before you can count on them as long-term answers.

With so much draft capital, I’m assuming both of the trenches get a fresh face in the draft. However, a few late-round picks shouldn’t be what this team settles for.
The first round is rich in talent if Pittsburgh wanted to go that way. On offense, the best guard in the class, Olaivavega Ioane, is right within range of pick 21. The Steelers could have a plug-and-play starter.
You could also target a potential tackle or guard in Kadyn Proctor. Though he was a tackle at Alabama, some are projecting him as a much better guard. He could start there for the Steelers as tackle sorts itself out.
Defensive line is less likely in round one, but if you get a shot at Caleb Banks, you may have to take it. His ability to rush the passer would be a welcome addition to this defense, and his potential is unmatched in this class.
Even if you bypass both sides of the trench in round one, going after those positions on day two of the draft makes sense.
The best teams in the NFL have talented and deep offensive and defensive lines. While the Steelers have successfully rebuilt both sides of the line, they need to continue adding young talent there to keep the cupboards full.
If Khan is serious about not being interested in drafting the trenches, it is a horrible sign for the Steelers' long-term outlook.
