It might be a dead time for the Pittsburgh Steelers regarding on-field play, but that will change in a hurry. With training camp getting closer, there could be movement around the NFL. Several members of the Steelers could hit the trade block and get involved in speculation. Different injuries and depth chart concerns around the league could create some interesting theatre.
One name to keep an eye on as the summer plays out is Broderick Jones.
The former first-round pick by Pittsburgh hasn't panned out the way the team would've liked when they made the selection. He is now working on his recovery from neck surgery, and no one truly knows when he will return to full health. With other players taking over starting spots at offensive tackle, his role with the team is up in the air.
Things haven't worked out for Jones with the Steelers, but a change of scenery could potentially work wonders. He probably wouldn't have a robust market if he hit the trade block, but the former top pick should have some potential left to unlock. Jones won't become a franchise-altering trade acquisition for a club, but he could help fix a team's weakness in the trenches.
Pittsburgh Steelers could make former first-round pick Broderick Jones available on the trade block
Any trade speculation surrounding Broderick Jones will only happen when he has a clear timeline for his return from injury. Thus far, he has only done stretching and light work during OTAs and minicamp. If he cannot put on the pads and practice fully at any point during training camp, many teams will not want him.
That said, if he gets healthy, there should be plenty of teams interested in him.
Tape doesn't lie, and you can certainly use that as a reason why the Steelers probably wouldn't get much in return if they traded Jones. He has struggled to be consistent during his time with the team, and many around the NFL know that. The best thing about this offensive tackle has been his ability to start on both sides of the offensive line, and the youth he still carries after 38 career starts.
It appears Troy Fautanu will be the starting left tackle, no matter if Jones is ready to return or not. That means Jones must beat out both Dylan Cook and Max Iheanachor for the starting spot at right tackle, which is unlikely. With a new coaching staff in the fold for the Steelers, it's possible they could be eager to move Jones if the right offer were sent their way.
Look for any contending team who might have a need at right or left tackle going into training camp.
The Steelers shouldn't anticipate clubs paying a high price for Broderick Jones if they make him available. They could always decide to keep him around as an insurance policy. It makes sense to test the trade waters surrounding this player, as it seems like his days of progression in Pittsburgh are over.
