One Steelers rookie is earning praise nobody expected this quickly

No one expected good news this early.

The Pittsburgh Steelers had three third-round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft. For some, Drew Allar is the biggest boom-or-bust in this class. For most fans, Gennings Dunker is an early favorite pick for his demeanor and ability to play sooner rather than later.

However, it could be Daylen Everette who flashes the most right away.

The rookie cornerback from Georgia is raw, but he has the size and tenacity to become a good starter if he continues to grow. The issue seems to be how to get him on the field with such a deep cornerback room.

Early reviews are raving about him, though. Jason Simmons, the defensive pass game coordinator, has already given the rookie rave reviews, citing his ability to learn and grow so early in his career.

When asked about being challenged by two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf, Simmons only had glowing remarks for Everette.

"He's played in a lot of big games coming from Georgia, let's just be honest... You talk about being receptive to coaching? He absolutely is. He is a sponge, he's a bright guy. And the next thing is his poise as well. To be a young guy, to not go up and down and realize when you go up against a quality receiver like DK Metcalf. He doesn't let that take him out of his technique, and I love the confidence."

Things are pointing up for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Daylen Everette

I’ll be the first to say I was skeptical of the Everette pick. While young, he saw a lot of snaps at Georgia, but never felt like he became a true shutdown option.

He plays a physical brand of football, but beyond that, he needs work. However, the early reports are positive, and hopefully that builds through the summer.

While Everette won’t land a starting role as a rookie, there is a need long-term at cornerback for once Jamel Dean ages out of the position. The immediate role could still be there for Everette.

Patrick Graham runs a lot of heavy secondary looks, so the need for defensive backs is prevalent. The room is deep, so Everette has to prove his worth, but he could earn a role as a run-down sub-package defender.

Special teams were always going to be in play, and that is still the best way for Everette to get on the field. However, with the coaches already impressed with the rookie, he could earn a defensive role sooner rather than later.

It was a glowing report for Everette. If he can build off that early success, he could become a contributor early in his rookie season.
