The Pittsburgh Steelers are losing coaches from their 2025 staff left and right. Special teams coach Danny Smith joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while Arthur Smith is the new offensive coordinator of the Ohio State Buckeyes. With a new head coach at the helm in Mike McCarthy, coaching turnover is hardly surprising.

While fans will miss Danny Smith on the sidelines chewing his wad of gum and screaming at players, Steelers fans won't bat an eye after the latest ex-coach was just snatched up by an AFC rival.

On Thursday, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Buffalo Bills are hiring Steelers' veteran offensive line coach Pat Meyer.

Meyer has been with Pittsburgh as a member of Mike Tomlin's coaching staff since the 2022 offseason. Before this, Meyer was an assistant offensive line coach for the Chicago Bears (2013-2015). Meyer also had brief stints as an offensive line coach for the Los Angeles Chargers (2017-2019) and the Carolina Panthers (2020-2021).

Meyer has ties to the Bills, as he briefly served as a football operations consultant in 2015. Now he lands on Joe Brady's new staff—the new head coach in Buffalo.

But you won't find many Steelers fans shaken up about getting their former OL coach poached away from the team.

Pittsburgh Steelers fans knew it was past time for OL coach Pat Meyer to hit the road

When you look at Pat Meyer's history working in the trenches, his offensive lines haven't produced much success over the years. During his time with the Chargers and Panthers, his offensive lines struggled. After two seasons in Carolina—his most recent stint before coming to Pittsburgh—Meyer was fired.

With the Steelers, Meyer didn't have a shortage of talent to work with. Though his initial starting offensive line had some major holes, Pittsburgh quickly invested heavily in players like Broderick Jones, Zach Frazier, Troy Fautanu, and Mason McCormick.

Unfortunately, despite the influx of talent added to the roster, Meyer's offensive line failed to produce impressive results, and Pittsburgh's young offensive linemen didn't take the leap forward early in their careers that fans expected.

As McCarthy and the Steelers willingly let Meyer walk and join the Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh was busy hiring James Campen. The impressive offensive line coach of the Green Bay Packers worked with McCarthy for 11 seasons from 2007 to 2018 while tasked with the responsibility of keeping quarterbacks (mainly Aaron Rodgers) upright.

There's always a chance the Pittsburgh Steelers go through growing pains after following new coaching techniques from a new offensive line coach. But the bar was low with Pat Meyer, and fans certainly won't lose sleep over his departure for the Buffalo Bills.
