The 2026 NFL Draft provided a mixed experience. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, it was a chance to fill much-needed roster holes before preparing for the upcoming season. Omar Khan’s front office worked diligently to finish the weekend with the best haul possible.

Every decision was not perfect, but I believe the investment in quarterback Drew Allar was the statement of the draft.

It is hard to ignore a potential franchise quarterback, especially when he spent his collegiate career so close to Pittsburgh’s backyard. In fact, Drew Allar is a familiar name for most football enthusiasts. He just did not receive as much coverage during the draft process as his peer, Ty Simpson. Still, his extensive résumé and ideal six-foot-five frame scream “franchise quarterback" potential.

The former five-star high school recruit made a significant impact at Penn State. He earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention recognition on multiple occasions and has been a contributing starter since 2023. In 2025, Allar started the first six games of the campaign. He finished his collegiate career with 7,402 passing yards, 61 touchdowns, and only 13 interceptions.

Like most NFL prospects, there are strengths and weaknesses to Allar’s game. His size and arm strength allow him to fire passes into tight windows with impressive velocity. The former Nittany Lion can also climb the pocket and escape defenders when necessary.

Still, rhythm and pre-snap reads remain areas that need development. Shaky footwork at times makes it difficult for the young gunslinger to consistently hit his targets in stride.

The Pittsburgh Steelers must give Drew Allar a chance to become the franchise quarterback

I expect Mike McCarthy to put his newest offensive leader through a quarterback boot camp.

The Steelers have limited options at the position, especially without a clear answer from Aaron Rodgers regarding a possible return.

Finding a remedy for Pittsburgh’s offensive struggles is not complicated. It starts with identifying an efficient leader worth developing for years to come. The uncertainty surrounding Rodgers has only increased the need for a reliable alternative. As the Steelers wait for his decision, they are suffering the effects of poor planning.

Sure, Will Howard’s presence is noteworthy, but it is difficult to rely on him without meaningful experience.

The former sixth-round pick spent time learning behind a Super Bowl MVP, but he has yet to prove he can lead Pittsburgh to consistent success. A similar argument can be made for journeyman Mason Rudolph, who has experience but limited upside at this stage of his career.

That uncertainty under center makes Allar’s arrival even more significant. He is a motivated competitor who will fight for a role on the roster. Under McCarthy’s guidance, there is a real chance he could be ready for action sooner than expected. Most organizations hesitate to throw a rookie quarterback into the fire, but Pittsburgh may not have the luxury of patience.

With limited proven options, someone inexperienced is likely to see the field. That reality opens the door for Allar to compete immediately. If he develops quickly, he could emerge as a legitimate solution at the position.

I am convinced Drew Allar was a great addition for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Yes, he was a considerable gamble being selected above the consensus value. But he has the tools, the mindset, and the opportunity to grow into something special. Whether that happens now or in the immediate future, his presence gives Pittsburgh something it has been searching for—hope at quarterback.
