Working out the kinks is the benefit of the off-season, and the Pittsburgh Steelers cannot turn away from time to fine-tune. Offensive line concerns are prevalent while Aaron Rodgers grows older by the day. If Mike McCarthy plans to protect his quarterback, he must use this week's preseason matchup with the New York Jets to work out the kinks.
And David Bailey will be waiting to cause havoc.Â
There’s a reason the former Texas Tech Red Raider was drafted second overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. His collegiate resume is through the roof. Not only did he lead the FBS with 14.5 sacks last season, but he stacked a nice pile of hardware. Bailey is a 2025 Unanimous All-American, Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year, and a Pony Express Award winner.Â
He can be used as a defensive end or a dynamic linebacker. And New York hasn’t been afraid to showcase his talents. Last week, Bailey played just a few downs against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He performed stunts, made an extra effort against the run, and showcased pass rush techniques.Â
I expect Bailey to earn a few more snaps in Week 2, so Pittsburgh's offensive line must embrace the challenge.Â
The Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line must answer the call against David Bailey
And why wouldn’t they?
A new regime under McCarthy has been carried by hope with sample-sized results. The only way to know if the coaching change was truly refreshing is to witness it on gameday. Sure, the O-line performed well in Week 1. But they weren’t perfect. James Campen’s unit allowed 10 pressures and 3 sacks. Troy Fautanu also accounted for two penalties equating to 15 yards.Â
Any chance to improve should be welcomed. Certainly for a group that must defend a 22-year veteran. Diminishing Bailey’s impact is a team goal. But it may ultimately fall in the hands of the right tackles. The versatile defender lined up as a left edge rusher. He made his presence known in a short amount of time.Â
An impressive outing against a top draft pick will be a small victory. With McCarthy "without a timeline" on Max Iheanachor's injury status, I expect Dylan Cook to see increased reps. The extra work is a blessing in disguise. He’s only started four regular-season games despite earning a positive reputation. According to PFF, Cook ranks 22nd in overall grade (76) and eighth in pass blocking (80.7).Â
A duel against a motivated rookie will not label the Steelers' offensive line for the season. But it will show us if the group is progressing towards accepting a large task for the upcoming season. Each preseason matchup is valuable. And I expect Pittsburgh to reap the reward of facing David Bailey.Â
