Steelers’ broken offensive line has only one real fix

This looming decision is long overdue.

One of the biggest problems for the Pittsburgh Steelers early in the 2025 season has been the offensive line. This was a unit fans were excited about. General manager Omar Khan made the offseason investments into this group over the past three years. But not only are the Steelers not seeing the fruits of their investments, the offensive line somehow seems to be getting worse.

When run-blocking, this group is responsible for repeated missed assignments and poor execution. Entering Week 4, the Steelers have been able to rush for just 189 combined yards on 67 carries. This dismal 2.8 yards per rush attempt is as bad as anything we've seen from the organization in recent memory, and Pittsburgh punched in just one score on the ground.

Through the air, things haven't been much better. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has just 552 passing yards through three games (184.0 yards per game) while taking seven sacks. While some of this is on the quarterback, the offensive line has been a mess in executing pass protection.

After each Steelers game, I've studied the all-22 film from the offensive line. From left to right, in pass protection and in run blocking, this group has struggled with missed assignments, sloppy mechanics, confusion, technique, and power.

And when everyone seems to be regressing, we have to start looking at the coaching staff. In this case, it's offensive line coach Pat Meyer.

The Pittsburgh Steelers should fire Pat Meyer for lack of OL development

Over the past three years, Omar Khan has invested two first-round picks, a second-round pick, a fourth-round pick, and a high-profile free-agent signing into the offensive line. But shockingly, this group is performing worse than the despicable unit did in 2021, the year before Meyer arrived.

In 2021, from left to right, the starting Steelers' offensive line consisted of Dan Moore Jr., Kevin Dotson, Kendrick Green, Trai Turner, and Chukwuma Okorafor. This unit was frustrating beyond belief. But somehow, the Steelers are getting an even lesser performance now despite significant investments.

Meyer was hired to be Pittsburgh's offensive line coach in February 2022. However, in his previous stops with the LA Chargers (2017-2019) and the Carolina Panthers (2020-2021), Meyer was largely unsuccessful.

Now all we can do is look at the evidence in front of us. Zach Frazier—who looked like one of the most promising centers in the NFL during his rookie season—has failed to take a step forward. Meanwhile, offensive tackles Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu have shown hardly any improvement since being drafted, despite being first-round picks.

What's most telling is that their three youngest starters (Frazier, Jones, and Fautanu) each have overall PFF grades that have plummeted from 2024 until now.

It's possible that the Pittsburgh Steelers simply busted on most of their draft investments on the offensive line, but the mechanical errors and overall sloppiness of the offensive line are completely indefensible at this point.

Pat Meyer has been here for going on four years, and the OL play is only getting worse. The Steelers might not have another answer lined up, but this team is long overdue to send Meyer packing.
