News broke earlier this week that Brendan Sorsby was withdrawing his lawsuit against the NCAA and would enter the Supplemental Draft later this Summer. The Pittsburgh Steelers and 31 other teams will now have the chance to submit a bid for his services and take a chance on him working out.
If I’m the Steelers, there is zero chance I don’t try to acquire his services.
I get the situation is murky right now, but the talent is still there. This team has tried every avenue of acquiring a new franchise quarterback with little success. Getting unconventional could be just what they needed.
The Pittsburgh Steelers can't afford to play it safe with a QB like Brendan Sorsby available
I don’t want to make light of the situation, as it is serious. That said, good coaching and talent can overcome this. If the price is right, using a future pick for Sorsby makes too much sense.
The Steelers should be making a move for Brendan Sorsby
For those of you who haven’t heard, Sorsby was banned by the NCAA due to sports betting. It seems like he has a problem, given the fact that he entered a help program to get over this addiction.
That alone makes him a massive risk, but the talent is undeniable. He has the classic size that this team covets in their quarterbacks, but he also has enough athleticism to make plays on the ground. He has a cannon for an arm with decent accuracy.
Most were projecting him as a first-round pick next year despite that class being loaded with talent. Being able to get a prospect like this at a discount is almost unheard of.
Now, I wouldn’t give up a lot to acquire him. Given the risk, I wouldn’t use a Day 2 pick. That said, any pick on Day 3 would be fair game if it were up to me.
While the Steelers have found decent players in the fourth round as of late, your options at quarterback would never be this strong.
If awarded to Pittsburgh, it creates a murky situation given the three young quarterbacks that would be on the roster. Add in Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph, and this room is suddenly crowded.
I’m willing to deal with that and take as many shots at the position as you can. I’d also argue that Sorsby would be instantly the most talented young option, as he has some of the physical traits that you love in Drew Allar but has better technique as of right now.
His value in the supplemental draft seems to vary. I’ve heard rumors anywhere from first-round pick to undrafted. However, I think a team will ultimately use a third-to-fifth round pick on the talented rookie.
I’d happily split the difference and take him if he’s available in the fourth round. If you don’t get him, you don’t lose anything, and it wouldn’t be public that you tried to submit a bid for Sorsby. You can still save face that you are fully in on your young quarterbacks, even if you thought Sorsby was a better option for the future.
So yes, I’m willing to take a Day 3 risk to acquire Sorsby. If he doesn’t work out, he joins a long list of fourth-round picks that never panned out. If he does, you get a franchise option for a fraction of the usual price.
