Steelers could kick failing OL coach to the curb for big-name candidate

The Pittsburgh Steelers have some deeply-rooted issues on the offensive line. Despite significant and costly investments over the past three years, the O-line doesn't seem to be making improvements. Luckily, a proven commodity just hit the market... and the Steelers should pounce.

The Tennessee Titans became the first NFL team in 2025 to do some house cleaning—firing head coach Brian Callahan. Callahan, a former five-year offensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals from 2019-2023, was just a third of the way through his second season as an NFL head coach before getting canned.

Callahan's firing has already led to speculation that Steelers OC Arthur Smith could be in line to return to his former team—this time getting poached for a head coaching job. But regardless of what happens with Smith, Mike Tomlin and the front office should rush to sign offensive line guru Bill Callahan.

The Pittsburgh Steelers should replace Pat Meyer with Bill Callahan

Bill, the father of Brian Callahan, is a long-time NFL coach who has spent time as an OC and HC, but he's best known as an offensive line coach with an impressive body of work. Bill decided to walk away from his position when his son was sent packing.

Callahan aided the Dallas Cowboys to a fantastic offensive line from 2012 to 2014 before spending five years as the O-line coach in Washington. From there, Callahan spent four seasons (2020-2023) with the Cleveland Browns.

At every stop, Callahan has aided in the development of young draft picks and helped talented offensive lineman reach their potential—much like Mike Munchak used to do with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This is the opposite of what we've seen from Pat Meyer. Meyer coached struggling offensive lines with the Bears, Chargers, and Panthers before coming to Pittsburgh. We're now in Meyer's fourth season as the Steelers' offensive line coach, and players are still struggling with the same issues.

In fact, you could make a case that the technique and mechanics of some players (like Broderick Jones) have gone from bad to worse under Meyer. With two first-round picks, a second-round pick, a fourth-round pick, and a high-profile free agent making up the team's starting offensive line, there's no reason the Steelers should be struggling the way they have.

The Pittsburgh Steelers aren't a team that likes to make in-season coaching fires often, though they made an exception for Matt Canada during the 2023 season. They should make another exception to fire Pat Meyer and replace him with one of the most proven offensive line coaches in the business, Bill Callahan.
